  1. ecoHEALTH annual report SC-DIVERSITAS, 22-24 March 2011 A-H Prieur-Richard & P Daszak

  2. ecoHEALTH activities • NCEAS model with 3 on-going projects • DEEED: DIVERSITAS ecoHEALTH on Economics of Emerging Diseases (2 years) • DEBED: DIVERSITAS ecoHEALTH on Biodiversity and Emerging Diseases (1st year) • DESED: DIVERSITAS ecoHEALTH Surveillance of Emerging Diseases (starting in 2011)

  3. DEEED • Modeling the cost-benefits of the wildlife trade versus captive breeding as it relates to disease emergence and spread • Activities • Build a conceptual model of wildlife disease transport in relation to trade • Identify data to test the model • 2 manuscripts in prep. for Nature and Emerging Infectious Diseases

  4. DEBED • What are the main ecological drivers of emerging infectious diseases? • Research agenda: Conceptual paper on frontiers in diversity and disease transmission • Series of activities: • What causesnew diseases to emerge (process of emergence; effect of different BD components; super-jumpers)? • What causes changes in incidence of disease pattern in endemic cycle (abundance of host, reservoirs; specialist versus generalist)? • Link to management & policy

  5. DESED • Standardized system of surveillance • Inform about emergences or outbreaks of diseases • Test some science questions related to biodiversity and emerging diseases • PREDICT project (USAID) • Sites in Latin America, Asia (Africa) • Link to GEO BON?

  6. Policy • Follow up on DEEED results (wildlife trade & infectious diseases) • 1st exploratory meeting (ecoHEALTH, Natural Resources Defense Council - NRDC, GISP, CI) • Further exploration of linkages with: • World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) • One health Commission • IUCN Wildlife Health Specialist Group • Convention on Biological Diversity

  7. Capacity building • EcoHealthNet: Ecology, Environmental Science and Health Research Network (NSF-RCN): provides graduate training on topics related to ecoHEALTH activities • Write Shop (IDRC, ecoHEALTH) towards developing countries: Increase their knowledge of the process of writing and submitting manuscripts to international academic journals

  8. Thank you !
