  3. Background Music vs. Art Music • Background music fulfills a need apart from the music itself Ex: Aerobics Music • Art Music is music people listen to because it is intellectually fascinating and psychologically satisfying Ex: Going to the Buffalo Philharmonic to hear a concert

  4. Humans vs. Animals • Fine Arts help make the difference between LIVING and EXISTING • Music is considered a fine art because: • Music is interesting and satisfying • Art is the product of culture What are some similar characteristics between music of different cultures?

  5. Music and Culture • Music and Art is created by people, for people • Music is a part of a humans culture • Without being aware of your culture, you can feel out of place What type of music do you associate with your culture?

Hearing and Listening • Listening is different than hearing- Listening requires KEEN CONCENTRATION • Some music requires undivided attention • Everyday music fulfills its function without being listened to carefully What are some examples of music you LISTEN to? What are some examples of music you HEAR?

  7. “I know what I like” • You should know something about a piece of music before you decide you don’t like it • No music is inferior, only music you do not yet know • Some music is created for listening, others are to advance non-musical outcomes • Often, music that offers the greatest rewards are those that need time to get to know!
