  2. Magnetic Field • Electrons spinning around their own axis produce a magnetic field. • Every spinning electron is a tiny magnet.

  3. Magnetic Field • Most materials are not magnetic b/c their magnetic fields cancel each other

  4. Magnetic Field • In materials such as Iron Nickel and Cobalt the fields do not cancel each other. They are called ferromagnetic

  7. Clusters of aligned atoms are called domains • Permanent magnets are made by putting iron, cobalt or nickel in or near strong magnetic fields • Another way is to stroke the piece of iron with a magnet…this lines up the domains in the iron
