  1. Sixth Framework Programme Specific Support Action EC-INCO-CT-2005-016414 MISSION • WP05 • CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISATION OF MULTIFUNCTIONAL MATERIALS • METROLOGICAL CONTROL AND STANDARDISATION

  2. Sixth Framework Programme Specific Support Action EC-INCO-CT-2005-016414 MISSION • Metrology and testing methods to determine the properties of multifunctional materials under different operation conditions are essential engineering tools in materials development. Europe-wide efforts to help harmonise measurement and testing methods, in order to prepare the future standards with regard to the new knowledge-based materials can represent a major contribution to the internal market.

  3. MISSION Sixth Framework Programme Specific Support ActionEC-INCO-CT-2005-016414 • A large variety of analytical reference methods are needed to enact policies of the EU and to provide hands-on scientific support towards harmonisation and interaction with the trading partners of the EU, and in particular with Candidate Countries. These methods undergo a full validation, meaning that the performance characteristics are extensively established and they fulfil the requirements for reliability and accuracy.

  4. MISSION Sixth Framework Programme Specific Support ActionEC-INCO-CT-2005-016414 • To organise and co-ordinate on national level multidisciplinary study, training, expert activities (expertise, consults of end-users), EU collaborations on chemical analysis, physical methods of characterisation, as well as certification of multifunctional materials with environmental impact. • To organise training courses for PhD students and young scientists that shall apply, synthesise, characterise and certify multifunctional materials with environmental impact.

  5. MISSION Sixth Framework Programme Specific Support ActionEC-INCO-CT-2005-016414 • What should be done? • Establishment of contacts and integration with European and regional bodies and scientists dealing with the application and characterisation of multifunctional materials with environmental impact.: • Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements - Joint Research Centre, Geel, Belgium • Materials Science Institute, Technical University Darmstadt, Germany • Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), Germany • Other?

  6. MISSION Sixth Framework Programme Specific Support ActionEC-INCO-CT-2005-016414 • Providing expert consultations on the characterisation of multifunctional materials. New materials should be produced and certified in accordance with internationally accepted guidelines, e.g. from the International Standards Organisation (ISO). • Training and capacity building of young researchers through PhD thesis, postdoctoral study, exchange of long and shorttherm visiting scientists. The fields are chemical analysis, metrology in chemistry, certification of materials, all of them in conformity with CEN and ISO standards. Training/advice on traceability and uncertainty evaluation of chemical measurement results.

  7. MISSION Sixth Framework Programme Specific Support ActionEC-INCO-CT-2005-016414 • Milestones • Identification of leading European research teams. • Mapping of existing research in Bulgaria. • Collecting of Bulgarian and EU regulatory issues for chemical analysis and certification of inorganic materials.

  8. MISSION Sixth Framework Programme Specific Support ActionEC-INCO-CT-2005-016414 • Expected results • Europe-wide efforts to help harmonising of measurement and testing methods in order to prepare the future standards concerning new knowledge-based materials. This can represent a major contribution to the internal market. • Systematic training and capacity building of young researchers. We shall organise training in the field of chemical metrology, environmental analytical chemistry; we shall host two seminars. • New strategy for certification of multifunctional materials with environmental impact. • New scientific data acquisition.

  9. MISSION Sixth Framework Programme Specific Support ActionEC-INCO-CT-2005-016414 • Deliverables • Report on Bulgarian and EU legislation for characterisation and standardisation of materials • Scientific communications and review papers • PhD theses in environmental analytical chemistry • Progress reports • Final report
