  1. BELLWORK Copy these sentences into your notebook. Underline the common nouns, put two lines under compound nouns, and circle the proper nouns. • Because insects are so small, they must have creative ways to protect themselves, Sunday through Saturday, 365 days a year. • A caterpillar has sharp hairs that will break and release poison when they prick your skin. • One species, found in North America, looks like a type that tastes bad to birds.

  2. PLANNER: HOMEWORK Enjoy break!

  3. Nouns 11-20-18

  4. Nouns • Can we give the definition of a noun? • A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or condition • Nouns both name things that can be seen and touched and things that cannot be seen or touched • For example, a noun can be • A thing: cicada, tree, store • An idea: justice, rebellion, peace • A condition: joy, illness, beauty

  5. Practice Identify the nouns in the group. Name whether that noun is a person, place, or thing. Example: 1. Technician / Belief / Direct Nouns: Technician- Person, Belief- Thing • Insect / Flutter / Identification • Smelled / Scent / Labratory • Immature / Appearance / Swamp

  6. Now That We Have An Idea... • Let’s talk about more specific types of nouns • A collective noun is a noun that names a group of people or things • So, we could have… • A swarm • A crowd • A herd • A committee

  7. Nouns • A collective noun, however, is not to be confused with a compound noun • A compound noun is a noun that is composed of more than one word • Compound nouns can be written in a few different ways

  8. Separated • A compound noun can be written as two words that are separated but still create one person, place, or thing • For example: • Bubble bath • Station wagon • Can you think of any other examples?

  9. 2. Hyphenated • Some compound nouns are written with hyphens between words to create the compound noun • For example: • Daughter-in-law • Hand-me-down • Can you think of any other examples?

  10. 3. Combined • These words are two combined nouns that create one new word • For example: • Shipwreck • Handstand • Can you think of any other examples?

  11. Practice I would like you to pick out and write down the compound nouns in the following paragraph: A railroad worm, the larval form of a beetle found in South America, makes its own light. A flea has a broad jump of over 33 centimeters. Honeybees do a dance to communicate where a specific flower is located, and the queen bee of bumblebees gives birth to every bee that lives in her beehive.

  12. The Two Groups of Nouns • All nouns in existence are in one of two groups: proper or common nouns • Proper nouns always begin with a capital letter • Proper nouns name a specific person, place, or thing • Common nouns, on the other hand, are just the ones that we see in everyday life • They are just normal words that we do not need to capitalize, because they are not specific

  13. Practice Pick the proper noun out of each group and capitalize it, please. • insect / bumblebee / north america • thorax / professor / monday • tarantula / chicago / condition • dandelion / mothers’ day / mothers

  14. So… What is a noun? • A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea • With nouns, there are two concrete groups that every noun can be put in • What are they called? • Common and Proper • What is a compound noun? • What are the three ways compound nouns can be put together? Now, let’s do some final practice!
