THE GREAT WHITE CONTINENT • Antarctica is also known as ‘The Great White Continent’ because • It always stays white throughout the entire year, not • Changing with the seasons. • The lowest temperature recorded in Antarctica was -70 degrees centigrade. • Winds in Antarctica can reach up to 120 miles per hour. • 50% of the worlds seals live in Antarctica. • Antarctica is surrounded by the vast Southern Ocean and possesses 75% of fresh water and is 98% ice. • The ice cap is 3 miles deep, and below are 2 miles of • Mountain ranges.

The great white continent • The largest glacier in Antarctica is called the Lambert and it is • 25 miles wide, and moves 2/3 of a mile per year. • When parts of the glacier break off they float off and become ice bergs, • A life of winds and waves carves the ice bergs and can survive but to • 10 years. Only 1/5 of an ice berg shows on the surface. • In winter, Antarctica almost doubles in size.

  4. The great white continent • 360 million sea birds use the Southern Ocean for food and all of them • survive on krill. Birds mainly come to land to breed. • Fur seals can dive for 100 meters or more. • Giant Petrels are also known as the ‘Vultures of Antarctica’. • The biggest bird of Antarctica is the Wandering Albatros with a wing • Span of 3 meters and can travel up to 5,000 miles. Albatros chicks weigh • 10 kilos and are fed by their mothers every 3 to 4 days for 10 months.
