  6. Committee of Public Safety • July 1793 Robespierre became leader • His rule became known as Reign of Terror • His goal was to protect Revolution from “enemies” • Accused enemies were sent to the guillotine

  7. Reign of Robespierre • Virtue and terror are necessary parts of government • Sent George Danton to the guillotine in 1794 • “ Don’t forget to show my head to the people. It’s well worth seeing.” • Approximately 40,000 were executed
