Our Mission Through our efforts with our local chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS), our mission is to:1 – Raise money needed for research, treatment and local support programs2 – Raise the support and awareness needed to help those battling this debilitating disease We have been fighting Multiple Sclerosis since 1999, but Brie and I are among the lucky ones… We can fight back We ride for those who can’t

  4. 2009 will be our breakthroughyear in Portland! • National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s2009 bike MS – 150-mile, 2-day bike tour • July 2009 (date, location TBD) • Team Amulet’s Target • 10 people riding with our team • Raise $50,000 • Continue to focus on awareness, appreciation & support • Local Sponsorship is what will get us there • Media support to spread the message • Donation support to meet our goal

Why do we ride? • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system • Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. • The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another.

  6. Why do we ride? • I was diagnosed while serving overseas with the US Army • 27-year old Army helicopter pilot (West Point, Class of 1993) • Loss of vision & motion was the initial onset • Treatment and medication have controlled the progression for now

Why do we ride? • I was lucky to have the support I needed early on • US Army & VA Healthcare System are there for the treatment of my physical issues • National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) provides a wealth of advocacy & support • Friend, family & loved ones support andassist me every day (led by my love, Brie!) • Monte! (it’s always about the dog…)

  8. Why do we ride? • My life stopped. But support was there to help me restart.For me, it has worked out very well! • Not everyone is as fortunate • 2.5 Million people worldwide, 400,000 in the USOver 7,000 in Oregon & SW Washington • The progress can varyWalking (Gait), Balance, & Coordination ProblemsFatigue Numbness Seizures Bladder Dysfunction Bowel Dysfunction Vision ProblemsDizziness and Vertigo Sexual Dysfunction PainCognitive Function Emotional Changes DepressionSpasticity Speech Disorders Itching Swallowing Problems Headache Hearing LossTremor Respiration / Breathing Problems • The questions are impossible to answerWill I end up in a wheelchair? Will I go blind tomorrow?What will happen to me? When will I have my next attack?

Why we support our local NMSS… • The Oregon Chapter of the National MS Society • is 36 years old and is currently serving over 7,000 individuals with MS plus family members, friends and health care professionals in the chapter area • serves the areas of Oregon and Clark County, Washington • helps people affected by MS by • funding cutting-edge research • driving change through advocacy • facilitating professional education • providing programs and services that help people with MS and their families move their lives forward
