  9. El Museo Nacional de Antropología • Contains artifacts from the indigenous cultures of Mexico. • La Piedra del Sol is an enormous Aztec calendar, which is now housed in el Museo. It contains a 365-day calendar and a 260-day ritual calendar.

  11. La piñata • Some say that Marco Polo brought the piñata from China. It was then brought by the Spanish to Mexico. • One thing is for sure: whenever there is a piñata, there is a party. • Before, people used to make piñatas by covering a clay pot. Now piñatas are made from cardboard. They are filled with candy and surprises.

El temblor de México de 1985 • September 19th and 20th, 1985 • In the center of the city, more than 50% of the buildings destroyed were houses and apartments. • More than 9,500 people died. • As the extent of the destruction became apparent, people showed solidarity and helped their neighbors. Others collected clothes, food, and money for those who had suffered the devestation.

  19. La comida mexicana • Typically, breakfast is a light mid-morning meal. • Lunch is the main meal of the day. It takes place between 2-4 pm, and is called “la comida.” It is typical for businesses to close early in the afternoon, then people eat large lunches and take a siesta in the heat of the day. • Dinner is much lighter than what you or I would eat, and also served later than we would probably eat.

Las telenovelas • Soap operas in México last just a few months, whereas in the U.S. they can last decades. • Telenovelas are extremely dramatic, and people in the Spanish-speaking world love them. • It is much more common to see famous actors and actresses in telenovelas than American soap operas.

Puerto Rico • Puerto Rico has marvelous beaches. • The island can be explored by boat in the sea or by horse in the beaches and mountains. • At the center of the capital, San Juan, is el Viejo San Juan. Many buildings have survived from colonial times, and there is a lot to see such as the cathedral and the fort San Felipe de Morro which was constructed by the Spanish to protect the island against pirates.

  26. Puerto Rico • Baseball is an extremely popular sport among people in Puerto Rico. Some famous baseball players who are from Puerto Rico include Roberto Clemente and Orlando Cepeda.

  27. Puerto Rico • El Yunque is a tropical rainforest (the only one in the National Parks Service of the U.S.) with a variety of flora, fauna, and birds. There you can see an exibition and film about the park and climb a peak. • There are manatees in Puerto Rico. In the past, mariners have mistaken the sounds that manatees make with those of sirens or mermaids. • In Arecibo, Puerto Rico, is the largest single-dish radio observatory in the world.
