PHARISEEISM – THE PROBLEM OF BEING “US”

PHARISEEISM – THE PROBLEM OF BEING “US”. Ezekiel 33:31-32. I Like to be “Right”. So did the Pharisee. Does being correct make everyone else incorrect? Does it make me “honorable” or obnoxious? Matt. 15:7-9 – an ancient problem. The problem of a heart “out of joint”.

  1. PHARISEEISM – THE PROBLEM OF BEING “US” Ezekiel 33:31-32

  2. I Like to be “Right” So did the Pharisee. Does being correct make everyone else incorrect? Does it make me “honorable” or obnoxious? Matt. 15:7-9 – an ancient problem. The problem of a heart “out of joint”.

  3. Men’s Applause Over God’s Approval John 12:42-43; 5:44 Matt 23:5-7 To “strain out a gnat”. That is our problem. Micah 6:8; Matt. 23:23 We like applause. Hopefully not as much as we seek God’s approval. We also don’t like the criticism of our brothers and sisters when we don’t conform. Always look to God for comfort and approval.

  4. Human Tradition Over Heavenly Truth Matt. 15:1-9 Some of their traditions had evolved over time. So have some of ours. Some of their traditions violated heavenly truth. Do ours? I like tradition – I don’t have to think anymore (brush your teeth, which sock do you put on first?) In spiritual matters, we need to think about God. Matt. 6:33

  5. Fleshly Lineage Over Spiritual Heritage John 8:31-40 What does it mean to be “Abraham’s children” to the Pharisees? What does it mean to Jesus? Romans 2:28-29 Parents should try to communicate love for God over “church”.

  6. Temporal Riches Over Eternal Reward Luke 16:13-14, 19ff Wealth offers “station”, and sometimes that substitutes for service. Again, a heart “out of joint”. Jesus came to serve, not to be served. Work here – Rest there (in heaven) Amos 2:6-8 Matt. 6:19-21

  7. Conclusion Heb. 3:12-14 Examine your life and faith. Keep your eyes on heaven, and heaven’s King. Phariseeism is “normal”. We have to fight it always. Seek to be correct, but realize we will always need a Savior!
