  1. Slides to accompany the Colonial P.E.R.S. Assessment

  2. Warm up for DBQ- discuss with seat partner • What does PERS stand for? • Why were the first Africans brought to America? • Why was Jamestown founded? • Why was Plymouth founded? • What is a political effect of settlement in America?

  3. Political, Economic, Religious, Social • The first Africans were brought to America to work on the plantations- an Economic factor and because of European racism- a Social factor • Jamestown was founded for Economic reasons- gold and land. • Plymouth was founded for Religious reasons- freedom to worship away from Church of England. • A political effect of settlement: • In Virginia they set up a Representative Government- the House of Burgesses. • In Plymouth, the Pilgrim men signed the Mayflower Compact agreeing to set the rules together.

  4. Finishing the packet • Reread the excerpts. • Answer all the questions completely • Look for quotes that support each of the P.E.R.S. factors for immigrating to America. • You can highlight those quotes that you might use on your outline tomorrow.

  5. The thesis statement must answer the question on its own. Decide what the topics are for your three body paragraphs before you finish the thesis statement. Those topics should be included in your THESIS STATEMENT.

  6. The thesis statement must show the organization of the essay. The highest points go to thesis statements that list 3 specific reasons. Examples of thesis statements: • Odleeighth graders are nice and cool. • Odle eighth graders are smart, friendly and hip. • Odleeighth graders receive high grades, cooperate in groups to finish work quickly, and are adept at using the latest technology.

  7. Filling in the Outline You are outlining only the BODY PARAGRAPHS not the introduction or closing Write the Topic of each Paragraph by the Roman Numerals, I, II, III as the Topic sentence of each Paragraph • the a, b, c lines are for the concrete details- must be a quote. Quotes can be like this if too long to fit: a. “political economists of the period…was a national asset” (doc.3)
