  1. Thriving Hormones Detox • How the hormones work • Liver • Additional detox tools • How to work with the questionnaire

  2. WHAT are hormones? Hormones are chemical messengers. They travel in your bloodstream to organs, glands and tissues. They are involved in many processes in the body, including: • Sexual functions • Reproduction • Metabolism: how your body gets energy from the foods you eat • Mood • Growth and development

  3. ENDOCRINE GLANDS • Endocrine glands are special groups of cells, which make hormones. Hormones are very powerful. That is why too much or too little of a certain hormone can be serious.

  4. WOMEN’S HORMONES • Estrogen • Progesterone • Follicle Stimulating hormone • Luteinizing hormone • Testosterone

  5. MENSTRUAL CYCLE • A menstrual cycle is determined by the number of days from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. Day one of the menstrual cycle is the first day of full bleeding. A typical cycle is approximately 24 to 35 days (average 28 days for most women). It is not abnormal for a woman’s cycle to occasionally be shorter or longer. • On day 1 of your period, estrogen and progesterone levels are low. They signal the pituitary gland to produce FSH. FSH begins the process of maturating the follicle (fluid-filled sac in the ovary containing egg) • The follicle produces more estrogen to prepare uterus for pregnancy around ovulation (day 12-14). Higher levels of estrogen trigger a sharp raise in Luteinizing Hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland, causing release of the egg from follicle.

  6. MenstrualCycle

  7. PROGESTERONE • It balances the effects of estrogen • Happy and relaxing hormone • Produced by ovaries, after ovulation becomes the corpus luteum (sack that the egg comes from) and dominates the luteal phase of the cycle • Its main job is to build up the uterine lining and help mature and maintain the uterine lining if there is a pregnancy. If there is not pregnancy progesterone levels fall, the uterine lining sheds, and the menstrual cycle begins.

  8. LOW PROGESTRONE SYMPTOMS • Ovarian cysts, breast cysts or endometriosis • PMS • Headaches, especially around your period • Anxiety • Painful and heavy periods • Water retention • Bloating • Hot flashes • Irritability • Itchy or restless legs, especially at night • Difficulty falling or staying asleep

  9. ESTROGEN * Responsible for growing and maturing the uterine lining and maturing egg prior to ovulation • Produced in ovaries and adrenal glands as well as in the fat tissue • Most abundant in the first half of menstrual cycle • Types of estrogen: • Estrone (E1) – “weaker” estrogen, higher in pregnant and menopausal women • Estradiol (E2) – “aggressive” estrogen highest in pre- menopausal women, linked to breast cancer • Estriol (E3) – “protective” estrogen, contributes to healthy and youthful skin, keeps the vagina moist and lubricated, prevents hot flashes and night sweats, has a anti-cancer role.

  10. ESTROGEN METABOLISM • Estrogens are metabolized in 2 phases: Phase 1 (hydroxylation) and Phase 2 (methylation) detoxification. • 3 different pathways by which the detoxification can occur. • 2 hydroxyestrone: 2-OHE1 (2-hydroxyestrone) is considered a ‘good estrogen’ and it does not stimulate cell growth. It can block the action of stronger, potentially carcinogenic estrogens. • 16-Hydroxyestrone, Phase I detox. However, Phase 2 is a reduction phase and produces Estriol(E3), which is a very weak estrogen.16-OHE1 has significant estrogenic activity and studies show it may be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Higher levels are associated with obesity, hypothyroidism, pesticide toxicity (organochlorines), too much Omega-6 fatty acids, and inflammatory cytokines. • 4-Hydroxyestrone: This pathway is the most problematic and we want to limit estrogen metabolism through the 4-OH pathway as much as possible. It may directly damage DNA and cause mutations which enhance cancer development.

  11. HIGH ESTROGEN SYMPTOMS • PMS • Breast and ovarian fibroids • Endometriosis • Hair loss • Heavy menstrual bleeding • Anxiety , mood wings and irritability • Fat around the hips • Water retention, puffiness and bloating • Brest tenderness and cysts • Brown facial discoloration (melasma)

  12. PROGESTERONE VS ESTROGEN PROGESTRONE • Maintains endometrium * Natural diuretic • Protects against fibrocystic breasts • Helps use fat for energy • Promotes normal sleep patterns• Natural anti-depressant & calms anxiety • Prevents cyclical migraines• Promotes normal sleep patterns• Facilitates thyroid hormone function • Helps normalize blood sugar levels • Helps restore normal libido• Stimulates new bone formation• Prevents autoimmune diseases ESTROGEN •  Creates endometrium •  Breast cell stimulation (fibrocystic breasts) •  Increased body fat and weight gain •  Little or no libido • Salt and fluid retention •  Depression, anxiety, and headaches •  Cyclical migraines •  Poor sleep patterns •  Interferes with thyroid hormone function •  Impairs blood sugar control • Restrains bone loss •  Increased risk of breast cancer •  Relives hot flashes •  Triggers autoimmune diseases

  13. TESTOSTERONE • An important sex hormone for women, but in much lower levels • Produced by ovaries and adrenal glands • Big surge during ovulation and slight rise before the period • Maintains muscle mass and bone strength • Enhances sex drive and helps with overall sense of well-being

  14. SYMPTOMS OF TOO MUCH TESTOSTERONE • Excess body hair • Acne • Hair growth on chin or upper lip (hirsutism) • Balding • Menstrual irregularity • Oily skin • Changes in body shape • Increased muscle mass • Voice hoarseness • PCOS- Polycystic ovarian syndrome: can lead to infertility.

  15. PERIMENOPUSE • Perimenopause is defined as “around menopause.” It is a transitional phase, called such because it happens before menopause. During perimenopause, you will still have periods (whether they’re regular or irregular) and are considered to be in your reproductive years. Some hormonal changes will occur, like changes in period cycle, sleep disturbances, hair loss, weight gain, mood swings or estrogen dominance. • Perimenopause can start long before menopause officially hits. In fact, nowadays women enter this stage even ten years ahead of menopause. Perimenopause can happen even during your 30s! During this time the ovaries’ production of estrogen and progesterone decreases.

  16. MENOPAUSE • A woman “officially” reaches menopause 12 months after her last period. However, changes and symptoms can begin several years earlier. Some of these symptoms include changes in the monthly cycle and hot flashes.

  17. SYMPTOMS • There are a number of symptoms that commonly occur during menopause and perimenopause. Some women may experience many of these symptoms, while others experience just a couple. • Symptoms include: • Changes in periods - shorter/longer, lighter/heavier, more/less frequent • Hot flashes and/or night sweats (including flushing and sweating) • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep • Vaginal dryness • Bladder issues (including bladder infections, sudden urges, incontinence, and leakage during exercise, sneezing, or laughing) • Mood swings (including irritability) • Difficulty focusing attention or remembering things • Thinning hair (on the head) and more hair on the face • Weight gain (including waist circumference) • Joints and muscles may feel stiff and achy • Headaches • The reason for this huge variety of symptoms is because the hormone estrogen is used by many parts of the body.

  18. OTHER SYMPTOMS • Other important health factors to consider, particularly after menopause are: • Metabolism and fat cells change, so women may gain weight more easily; • Increased risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes; • Bones become less dense, and risk of fracture increases (osteoporosis). • Menopause is an important transition in our lives. We can use it as a reminder to take good care of our health & wellness.

  19. BEST HORMONE TEST • DRIED URINE TESTING (The DUTCH TEST) • Dutch Test is my favorite method of hormone and adrenal testing. • Advantages of this test are: • very easy to collect and send back to the lab • gives you estrogen metabolites (2-OH, 4-OH, and 16-OH) which are super important in cancer prevention • shows methylation (tells you how well your liver is excreting estrogen out of the body) • shows free cortisol, total cortisol, cortisone (the inactive form of cortisol) • shows levels of all three main estrogens: estradiol, estriol and estrone • gives you testosterone and its metabolites • tests neurotransmitters and melatonin • can be shipped outside of the US • Is stable for two weeks

  20. BEST HORMONE TEST CONT. • The cons of this test are that you need to limit fluid intake during the day you take the test, it is expensive (if you order on your own) and is not a great choice for those with kidney problems. • Approximate cost: $499 unless you work with a practitioner who can order it for less. • This is the test I work with it, and it is the gold standard of hormone testing. www.dutchtest.com

  21. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO HAVE BALANCED AND HAPPY HORMONES? • Reduce stress • Heal the gut • Balance your blood sugar • Love your liver • Heal the trauma • Love your adrenals • Rest • Exercise • Connect to your feminine • Mineralize your body

  22. Liver • Our liver is the largest organ of the body and main detoxification organ. • It is located on your right side on the end of your right rib cage, just below the diaphragm. • The main role of the liver is detoxification of drugs, cholesterol, hormones, food additives, and chemicals in cosmetics, blood, and protein. Liver also helps produce bile. Because of what we eat (fried food, processed food) and what is in environment (pollutants, pesticides, polluted water and chemicals) we can’t detoxify. Our liver is overloaded and overworked. • When our liver is overworked we can’t properly and efficiently detoxify.

  23. STEPS TO TAKE TO HELP YOUR LIVER DETOXIFY • Eat clean • Drink water with lemon right after you get up • Drink green juice every morning • Do coffees enemas • Eat liver or take liver tablets • Take supplements • Do herbal/liver detox flush once a year • Do Cranberry flush

  24. PHASES OF LIVER DETOXYFICATION • Phase one: converts a toxic chemical into less harmful chemical. • Phase two : is called conjugation pathway. During this phase, liver cells add another substance to a toxic chemical or drug, makes it less harmful, makes toxins water soluble and removes it from the body through urine or bile. • There are 6 pathways in phase two liver detoxification.

  25. SIX PATHWAYS IN PHASE TWO LIVER DETOXYFICATION • Glutathione conjugation • Amino acid conjugation • Glutathione pathway • Methylation • Sulfation • Acetylation • Glucouronidation Both pathways require adequate nutrients to work effectively.

  26. FOODS THAT PROMOTE DETOXYFICATION IN PHASE ONE • Cruciferous vegetables • Dark leafy greens • High quality, pastured, free-range, grass-feed, antibiotic and hormone-free animals • Citrus fruits • Certain amino acids

  27. FOODS THAT PROMOTE DETOXYFICATION IN PHASE TWO • Eggs • Fish oil • Cruciferous vegetable • Onion, garlic, shallots • High quality, pastured, free-range, grass-feed, antibiotic and hormone-free animals • Limonene- found on citrus skin and in the white fluffy part

  28. HERBS THAT SUPPORT LIVER DETOX • Burdock root • Milk Thistle • Turmeric • Dandelion • Cilantro • Parsley

  29. REMOVE FROM YOUR LIFESTYLE • Skin care with chemicals • Cleaning products with chemicals • Plastic bottles • Non-stick pans • Perfumes with chemicals • Air fresheners

  30. ADD TO YOUR LIFESTYLE • Sauna • Epsom salt baths • Lymphatic massage • Skin brushing • Enemas • Castor oil packs • Trampoline

  31. DETOX, LIVER AND HORMONES • Detox helps remove metabolized hormones • Removes waste form liver, lymphatic system, gut which helps with hormone balance • Person with sluggish liver will be impacted by hormonal imbalances • Methylation detoxifies estrogen, heavy metals, dopamine and histamine • Sulfation detoxifies excess steroids and thyroid hormones, excess bile acid and neurotransmitters

  32. QUESTIONARE • Take the questionnaire before you start the cleanse • Take the questionnaire after you are done with the cleanse • Stay on a clean diet and retake the questionnaire 4-6 weeks after you start the cleanse to evaluate the state of your hormones and health

  33. Part 1- Estrogen Dominance • If you’ve checked 3 or more you have issues with estrogen • It is a condition where women can have deficient, normal or excessive estrogen but have little to no progesterone to balance estrogen effect on the body. • Even women with low estrogen can be estrogen dominant if they don’t have any progesterone • Women can also have too many harmful estrogen metabolites as compared to the protective one (2:16 hydroxyestrone)

  34. Part 1- CDN • You need liver support • You need gut support • Avoid caffeine • Avoid alcohol • Avoid xenoestrogens • Use supplements to help liver detox and the gut • Avoid toxic personal care products • Go to www.ewg.org/skindeep

  35. Part 3- Low progesterone • If you’ve check more than 3: • You possibly have too to much estrogen and too little progesterone • Progesterone drops around 40-50 yo • Mood swings, anger, fragile, irritable, etc • Boost progesterone: reduce stress, support adrenals, eat clean food, adaptogenic herbs

  36. Part 2 – Not Enough Estrogen • Estrogen is needed for many functions in the body: bone health, brain health • Estrogen drops around 40-50 years • Estrogen helps to protect against cardiovascular disease • Makes you feminine • Memory issues, thin skin, vaginal dryness, bladder infection, libido and hot flashes • Balance your level of estrogen: add maca and eat enough fat • Check if you are in perimenopause

  37. Part 4- Too Much Testosterone • Check if you have PCOS • Balance your blood sugar : don’t over eat simple carbs, avoid sugar, have protein, fat and fiber with every meal • Support adrenals • Support healthy levels of estrogen and progesterone

  38. Part 5- HPA Axis Dysfunction (aka Adrenal Fatigue) • If you’ve check 3 or more: • Too little cortisol: tired all the time, afternoon crash, can’t function without coffee, dizzy when you get up to quickly, blood sugar issues • Reduce stress • Be gentle with yourself • Get regular meals • Adaptogenic herbs • Vitamin C

  39. Part 6- Too Much Cortisol • If you’ve checked more than 3 • Your life is you too stressed • Adrenal fatigue usually starts with too much cortisol • You are in a state of survival • Evaluate your life and your relationships in life • Balance your blood sugar • Don’t take too much on yourself

  40. Part 7- Not Enough Thyroid Hormone • Take a full panel thyroid test • Brain fog, hair falling out, tired, fatigued, weight gain • If you need thyriod medication you won’t have the best results, you need a medication • Balance all the hormones in the body • Autoimmune, to much estrogen • Support progesterone, eat a clean diet, take care of the gut, liver and adrenals

  41. Other Organs of Elimination • Liver • Skin • Kidney • Gut • Lungs

  42. The Gut • You need to have a bowel movement every single day • It help you to eliminate metabolized hormones and toxins • Constipation- going without bowel moment for 1 day • Program is full of fluids and fiber • Get at least 35 g fiber a day • If you don’t have a bowl movement for 4 days or you go to the bathroom more than 5 times a day you need to go to the doctor

  43. Skin • The biggest organ of elimination • Dry skin brushing • Exfoliation of the skin • Moving the lymphatic system • Move every day – yoga, walking

  44. Kidneys • Drink at least 64 oz. of water • Hydrate with juices, water, water infusions, lemon water • Filtered water • Add minerals or salt to the water

  45. Lungs • Inhaling helps with detoxification • We produce carbon dioxide, which is acids and too much of it builds in our blood • Practice breath work • Take deep breaths • Help release emotions
