  1. Thursday, February 3rd, 2011 Geography: IN: What country is the farthest south in the Western Hemisphere? Predict it’s climate. Content Objective: Students will locate physical and human features and evaluate their implications for society by describing the various regions of Chile and determining how humans interact with them in a persuasive letter to a friend.

  2. Point to the classroom wall I’d have to go through to get to Chile.

Key Words: • Region- A group of places with at least 1 common characteristic. • Places can be joined by: • Physical features such as mountains, oceans… • Human features such as languages, religion… • Often country, state, or city borders are drawn along the same lines as regions. Example: Most of FLORIDA’s borders are defined by ocean

  4. Region Continued… Sometimes regions extend beyond country, state, or city borders. Example: The Rocky Mountain region of the USA consists of at least 7 states. Or the Big 10 Athletic Conference

  6. Chile- Profile Population: 17,094,270 Capital: Santiago- Huge city (6 Million people) Think-Pair-Share- What % of Chile population lives in Santiago?

  7. Human Characteristics • Language= Spanish • Religion= Roman Catholic (divorce illegal) • History= Many years under military dictatorship- Agusto Pinochet • Many were killed, but country= peaceful & democratic now.

  8. Physical Characteristics- North • Very dry- desert, mountains, coast • Atacama Desert= driest in world. -Never recorded rain.

  9. Economy/ Business- North • Desert= very rich in minerals- copper, iron, molybdenum • Produces 1/3 of the world’s copper. • What happened recently to 1 of Chile’s copper mines? • Video 1 • Video 2

  10. Physical Characteristics- Central Andes Mountains: HUGE!! Create border between Argentina and Chile -Valleys, rivers, coast. Climate= similar to Colorado

  11. Physical Characteristics- Central Aconcagua (22,814) = Tallest mountain in Western Hemisphere (also border of Argentina- guards)

  12. Economy/ Business- Central Wine= grown in valleys between mountains. $1.3 billion/ year (5th largest exporter in world)

  13. Physical Characteristics- South Coast, islands, rain forest Climate= wet, cold (Village = only accessible by boat)

  14. Physical Characteristics- South Volcanoes Earthquakes & Tsunamis

  15. Physical Characteristics- South Mountains, glaciers, tundra (Tip of South America)

  16. Economy/ Business- South Fishing- Seabass & Salmon Tourism-

  17. OUT: Write a letter to(friend). You are trying to persuade (convince) him/ her to travel to Chile.You must include: -Who you are & why you’re writing -Why someone would want to come to Chile -Describe what there is to see/ do: -The Northern Regions of Chile -The Central Regions of Chile -The Southern Regions of Chile -Why someonewouldn’twant to travel to Chile.
