  1. Theme 2: Hospital design to reduce adverse events CEO, Jane Kraglund Odense University Hospital

  2. Adverse events at Odense University Hospital - Some key figures

  3. How may hospital design help to minimize adverse events and optimize patient safety? • “Medication” • When building the new university hospital the motto is ‘the right tablet from the right hand in the right mouth at the right time’ • Developing a concept of medicine distribution and medicine handling focused on patient safety aspects • There will not be any medicine rooms at the new university hospital but Satellite Pharmacies. This will enable the clinical staff to spend their time nursing, whilst the pharmacy staff will ensure patient safety by use of digital systems and supported by optimized logistical solutions • Standardization and accreditation – The Danish Health Care Quality Model • Implementing national guidelines

  4. How may hospital design help to minimize adverse events and optimize patient safety? • “Handover and transfer situations” • Patient centered care replaces our current physician centered system with one that revolves around the patient • Establishing clinical clusters when building the new university hospital ”Nyt OUH” and thereby reducing the number of clinical handovers within the hospital • Extensive use of telemedicine. The patients are treated in their own home and the risk of hospital induced infections can be minimized

  5. How may hospital design help to minimize adverse events and optimize patient safety? • “Safe surgery” • By following a few critical steps, health care professionals can minimize the most common and avoidable risks during surgery • Equipment related failures form a substantial proportion of all errors occurring in the operating room • Establishing “safe operating rooms” when building the new university hospital ”Nyt OUH” and thereby supporting the implementation of WHO Safe Surgery checklist • Implementation of national and international guidelines

  6. How may hospital design help to minimize adverse events and optimize patient safety? • “Automatic transfer of clinical data” • Some of the reported adverse events are about clinical data that is missing in the patient record or is manually wrongly entered in the patient record. • In the future clinical data such as patient temperature, blood pressure, pulse etc. will be automatically collected and transferred to the patient record. • Future purchasing of Medical Devices and wireless networking must support this digital strategy
