SERIOUSLY… • -ology: the study or science of • -scopy: from Italian scopo “watch and see” which was from the Greek skopos “to aim/ target” • -itis: inflammation • Iatrogenic: caused by healthcare professional (iatros- Greek for the healer) • Idiopathic: arising spontaneously or from an obscure or unknown cause (idios- Greek one’s own; pathos- suffering)

If you know Greek, you know medicine lingo… • Prostate- gland within the male reproductive system that is located just below the bladder; Greek prostates (to stand before) • Hysterectomy- removal of the womb; hystera- uterus, “-ectomy”- removal of ‘the animal within them [women] is desirous of procreating children, and when remaining unfruitful long beyond its proper time, gets discontented and angry, and wandering in every direction through the body, closes up the passages of the breath, and by obstructing respiration, drives them to extremity, causing all varieties of disease …’ Plato
