  2. Early Life • Margaret was born on May 23, 1810 in Cambridgeport, Massachusetts • Home schooled by her father • By 10 years old she was reading Classics in Latin • Finished her schooling years at a school in Connecticut. • Learned several languages • She was raised as a very intelligent person

  3. In her mid-twenties, Margaret was hired as a teacher at a school run by Bronson Alcott. • After about a year as a teacher she became a principal in a Rhode Island school for two years. • Started editing and writing articles for the “The Dial” which was a local publication. • Her essay, “The Great Lawsuit: Man Versus Men, Woman Versus Women”, which called for women’s rights, was published by “The Dial” • She was thought very highly of by her peers

  4. Margaret’s Publications • Her Publications all argued women’s rights • 1844- her first book “Summer on the Lakes” was published • “Woman in the Nineteenth Century” was published in 1854. • Became a classic of feminist thought • Started the Seneca Falls Women’s Convention in 1857

Accomplishments • Margaret was the first book review editor in the United States • First female foreign correspondent in the world. • She held seminars (women public speaking was against the law at the time) that many people attended. • She spoke about the need for women’s rights • Her books got many people to realize that women’s rights were needed. • One of only two women in the Transcendentalists Club. • She was highly respected within the club
