  2. Gather All Your Information • Education History • High School/GED • Post High School Education • Special Training/Certifications • Employment History • Dates of Employment • Address/Phone • Job Title • Job Responsibilities • Phone Numbers • Supervisor Names • Your Special Accomplishments

  3. Organize! Separate employment information by date • Most recent first • Oldest - Last • Write it out so you can read it before you type it

  4. Write it out first -- to see what you have

  5. JOB OBJECTIVE The job objective provides a focus for your resume. • 1 or 2 sentences • Be short and to the point • Avoid wordiness • Avoid job titles. • It is best to use broad categories of jobs rather than specific titles.

  6. JOB OBJECTIVE Clearly state what sort of a job you want • Job objectives should be stated as verb phrases • rather than sentences. • Carefully selected verbs will make you sound confident • Omit "I-centered" or obvious statements. • Such as "where I can learn" or "which will • enable me to advance."

  7. Not all resumes will have objectives • 1. What kind of position do you seek? • 2. What kind of company do you want to • work for? • If you have several job objectives, you may have a resume for each specific objective

Sample Job Objectives • A responsible position in retail sales. • Position as a Word Processing Secretary that will utilize my computer knowledge, strong people skills, organizational abilities, and business experience. • To obtain a position in the construction industry utilizing my 5 years experience in carpentry and commercial construction.

  9. JOB DUTIES WHAT DID I DO? List what SPECIFIC tasks you did in a day or a week Think hard and remember to include everything Write these on your resume under Job Duties or Responsibilities Most important first Avoid long narratives Be specific

  10. Examples • Responsible for fry cook station, customer service, cashier and kitchen maintenance. Assisted manager in scheduling and inventory. • Responsible for general written correspondence, multi-line telephone, and customer service. Created marketing plan which increased sales 5% over 4 months.

  12. REVIEW and CORRECT • Spelling • Dates • Accurate • Missing • Addresses • Yours as well as employers • Action Verbs • Descriptive adverbs

GAPS – Missing Dates • Gaps in your employment history raise red flags to the person reviewing your resume. • Whenever possible fill in large date gaps with real information • Caring for a spouse or parent • Stay at home parent with young children • Retraining or educational time • Looking for employment

  16. SENDING IT TO THE TOP • Always include a cover letter whether • Faxed • Mailed - or • By internet • Print resume on quality paper

COVER LETTER First View of YOU to your potential employer Written to a specific person or “Human Resource Manager” States where you saw the job posted (advertised) Contains several sentences specific to your skills and abilities that qualify you for this job. Invites personal contact back to you

  19. For Example ……… • I have extensive customer service experience. • Successfully carried our branch to the next level in sales. • Excellent oral and written communication skills. • Proficient in all types of warehouse equipment, with a certification in forklift.
