Diabetes: A metabolic disease • Diabetes mellitus (DM) is characterized by high blood sugar aka glucose (hyperglycaemia) • The metabolic control mechanism is regulated by the hormone insulin, which induces liver, muscle, and fat cells to absorb glucose • Type I DM is a total failure of insulin production, requiring insulin injection (~10% of DM) • Type II DM is a failure of insulin response due to insulin resistance or insufficient insulin production (~90% of DM)
Complications of Diabetes • Related Diseases (Metabolic Syndrome) • Obesity (by BMI or excess waist circumference) • Increased blood triglycerides and cholesterol • Raised blood pressure • Complications • Heart disease – heart attack and stroke • Kidney disease • Eye disease (blindness) • Nerve Damage • Erectile Dysfunction • Depression
Prevalence of Diabetes in Canada • 9 million Canadians suffer from some form of diabetes (about 1 in 3) • Incidence of type 2 is increasing rapidly due to: aging population, obesity, increasingly sedentary lifestyles • Life expectancy for people with type 2 diabetes may be shortened by 5 to 10 years. A person with diabetes can face direct costs for medication and supplies ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 a year. • By 2020, it’s estimated that diabetes will cost the Canadian healthcare system $16.9 billion a year.

Diabetes – the London Connection • October 31, 1920 : Banting conceives of the idea of extracting insulin from the pancreas • Summer 1921: Best assists Banting in the preparation of pancreatic extracts that prolong the lives of diabetic dogs • Banting had difficulty establishing a profitable medical practice his first year in London....
The Banting House ‘...had I not failed in my one year at London, I might never have started my research work...[London] the place of my hours of misery - and yet it was there that I obtained the idea that was to alter every plan that I had ever made.
