  1. FIVE STAR SAFETY & HEALTH CONSULTANCY DOLE ACCREDITATION # 1030-082301-0052 WELCOMES YOU TOConstruction Safety for Site Safety Officers Training

  2. DOLE ACCREDITATION # 1030-02301-0052 FIVE STAR SAFETY & HEALTH CONSULTANCY HAZARDOUS MATERIALS DAY 4

  3. RULE 1090 HAZARDOUS MATERIALS RULE 1091 This rule shall apply to all workers in which hazardous substances in solid, liquid or gaseous forms are manufactured, handled & used or in which flammable, irritating, offensive or toxic dusts, fibers, gases, mists or vapors are generated or released in quantities injurious to health

  4. WORKPLACE HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INFORMATION SYSTEM (WHMIS) Gives everyone the right to know about hazards of materials they work with & provides the means to find out that information it does this through: • Label • MSDS • Worker training & education

  5. LABELS Supplier labels with volume more than 100ml must include: • Product identifier • Appropriate hazard symbol/s • Risk phrases (such as “dangerous if inhaled”) • Precautions (such as “wear rubber gloves”)

  6. LABELS • First aid measures • Supplier identifier • Statement that a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is available for the product

  7. LABELS

  8. WORKPLACE LABELS Required when controlled products are produced on site or transferred from a supplier-labeled container. Label must include: • Product identifier • Safe handling instruction • Statement that MSDS is available

  9. CONTROLLED PRODUCTS UNDER WHMIS

  10. MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET (MSDS) Technical document that summarizes the Health & Safety Information available about a controlled product. Must be readily available at worksite for use by the workers. MSDS must provide: • Product information • Hazardous ingredients • Physical data

  11. MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET (MSDS) • Fire & explosion data • Reactivity data • Information on health effects • Preventive measures • First aid measures • Name & phone number of party that prepared the MSDS & date of preparation

  12. MSDS Effective Date Section 1 – Chemical Product & Company Identification Product Name: Toluene Manufacturer/Supplier: Shell Chemicals Address: Product Use: Organic Solvent

  13. MSDS Section 2 – Composition/Information on Ingredients Company Name Toluene 108-88-3 100 Yes

  14. MSDS Section 3 – Hazards Identification WHMIS Class/Description: Class B2 Flammable Liquid Class D2B other toxic effects – skin irritant Physical Description: Mobile liquid aromatic hydrocarbon colorless aromatic odor Routes of Exposure: Inhalation & Absorption Health Hazards: Flammable Liquid; skin irritation

  15. MSDS Section 4 – First Aid Eyes: Flush with water for at least 15 mins. Skin: Flush with warm water for at lest 20 mins. Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting Inhalation: Remove victim from further exposure

  16. MSDS Section 5 – Fire Fighting Measures Lower Flammability Unit: 1% (vol) Upper Flammability Unit: 7% (vol) Auto Ignition Temp: 480 °C Extinguishing Media: Dry chemical, CO2, foam, water fog Hazardous Combustion: Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide

  17. MSDS Section 6 – Accidental Release Measures Precaution: Issue warning flammable, eliminate all ignition sources, isolate hazard area

  18. MSDS Section 7 – Handling & Storage Handling: Flammable. Do not cut, drill, grind, weld on similar operations. Empty containers may contain hazardous product residues. Storage: In a cool, dry well ventilated area. Away from heat & ignition sources.

  19. MSDS Section 8 – Exposure Control Section 9 – Physical Data Section 10 – Stability & Reactivity Section 11 – Toxicological Information Section 12 – Ecological Information Section 13 – Disposal Consideration Section 14 – Transportation Information Section 15 – Regulatory Information Section 16 – Additional Information

  20. EDUCATION & TRAINING Third part of the WHMIS. To protect themselves & ensure proper handling, workers need to know how to use the information on label & MSDS. Worker Training Programs must be developed, implemented & reviewed at least once a year.

  21. EFFECTS OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES The effects of exposure to workplace safety hazards are sometimes immediate, painful & obviously damaging, but it is not easy to observe when & how the body cells are attacked by hazardous materials in the workplace. Many of the most disease do not occur until 10 to 30 years after exposure.

  22. ROUTES OF ENTRY Hazardous materials in the workplace may cause disease in the body at four main sites: • Body – skin, lungs, intestines • Blood • Central Nervous System • Organs that remove toxic agents – liver, kidney, bladder

  23. ROUTES OF ENTRY • Inhalation or breathing

  24. ROUTES OF ENTRY • Absorption through skin

  25. ROUTES OF ENTRY • Ingestion through mouth & digestive tract

  26. ROUTES OF ENTRY • Injection
