  3. Basic Information • Intermittent conflict between England and Spain. • Never formally declared. • Both countries achieved some of their aims. • Extinguished the wealth of the countries.

Causes of the War • Phillip II of Spain didn’t think Elizabeth was the rightful monarch. • Because of religious and commercial reasons. • In 1968, a slaving expedition lead by Sir Drake was attacked by the Spanish. • 1585, Elizabeth agreed to provide the Dutch with men, horses, etc. • Phillip II took this as a declaration of war.

  5. OUTBREAK! • War broke out in 1585. • 1587, Drake burned 37 Spanish ships; Phillips wants to invade England. • 1587, execution of Queen Mary. • July 29, Phillips obtained papal authority to overthrow Elizabeth.

  6. Invasion Spanish Armada English Armada Defeated the Spanish at Battle of Gravelines. In 1589, lead by Sir Drake and Sir Norreys, it went to torch the Spanish navy and capture a treasure fleet. Resulted in heavy casualties and financial loss for England. • Included 130 ships, 8000 soldiers, 1800 sailors. • Supported by Pope Sixtus V. • May 1858, set sail for England. • DEFEATED!

Later War • In this period of respite, the Spanish were able to refit and retool their navy. • The pride of the fleet were named The Twelve Apostles. • In 1596, an Anglo-Dutch expedition managed to sack Cádiz. • Normandy added a new front in the war and the threat of another invasion attempt across the channel. • King Phillip II dies at 1598. • At the end of 1601, a final armada was sent north.

  8. End of War & Effects • When James I came to the English throne, his first order of business was to negotiate a peace with Philip III of Spain, which was concluded in the Treaty of London, 1604. • English trade were attacked, And England was drained in men and treasures. • England also accomplished some of its war aims.
