Pacific Central Region ActivitiesWRT MM/MI Background: No Navy or Marines – only recruiters; Coast Guard overload Encouraged councils to “get involved” with MM/MI – Alameda Council adopted MARAD with help of Alameda’s Mayor Bev Johnson; welcomed Cape Orlando; schmoozed Keystone State; sponsored MARAD participants at council golf tournament Stockton Council (Pacific Division) adopted Golden Bear (CMA) Region meeting hosted a MM/MI panel Sep 2005

MM/MI Activities (cont) Sacramento Council in particular: • Sponsored the Grant Union School District Maritime Technologies Program • Increased NL membership through Grant Union contacts, AMMV, Port of Sacramento, and SS Jeremiah O’Brien • Feted and celebrated MM veterans at National Maritime Day salute on 22 May • Rededicating bell and plaque from USS Sacramento at the Sacramento Maritime Monument on 2 Sep 06 Merchant Marine Committee at Region level – • Keep councils informed about each others’ MM/MI efforts • Keep councils informed about national’s MM/MI efforts by National Merchant Marine/Maritime Committee

MM/MI Activities (cont) Merchant Marine Council (in process) – • Perhaps first ever “affinity group” council in Navy League • Emphasis on community education • Emphasis on informing local maritime community of state and congressional legislative efforts • Candidate members – SUP, MEBA, PCMC, Port of SF, AMMV, other Northern California maritime unions, shipping companies, and agents, as well as any interested person/organization • Selling point: No single voice for the maritime industry except the Navy League! • Near term mission – Get Legislative Alerts back on track!
