A scanner is like a copier, except that instead of making the copy onto paper, it creates a computer image file of the scanned image. Once the image is in this digital form, you can store it on your computer hard disk, manipulate it with a graphics design program, add it to your poster design, and more.
Once the image is scanned, some kind of software is needed to convert the digital code to a viewable image. Most scanners come with basic software. There are many brands of imaging software available on the market.
Handheld scanners use the same basic technology as a flatbed scanner, but rely on the user to move them instead of a motorized belt. This type of scanner typically does not provide good image quality. However, it can be useful for quickly capturing text.
Drum scanners are used by the publishing industry to capture incredibly detailed images.
