  2. 218. Compounds Formed from Greek and Latin Elements • In Greek and Latin, in contrast to English, roots do not typically stand alone. So compounds are composed of bound roots. • Compounds formed in English from borrowed Latin and Greek morphemes preserve this characteristic. • Example : eugenics, stethoscope, automobile

  3. 219. Prefixes and suffixes • Another method of enlarging the vocabulary • Twentieth-century popular creations : stardom, filmdom, fandom, gangster • Familiar endings such as –some, -ful and –less can be freely added
