  1. Opening sequence analysis delicatessen

  2. Where and why is the film set? How is this revealed? • We are introduced with an tracking shot of some abandoned streets where we see the ruins of many different buildings. • We hear the none diegetic sound which adds to the eeriness of the scene. • The scene is set in a deli / butchers we know this as there is an establishing shot of a building which shares it name with the film title which suggests that this will be the central focus for the film. • Delicatessen – connotes the theme of a deli or butchers.

  3. What we you know about the characters that have been introduced? We are introduced to a male character who we presume is the butcher as he is in a kitchen wearing dirty chef garments. He is shown sharpening a meat cleaver suggesting to the audience he is dangerous and intimidating which creates a atmosphere of fear among the audience. The camera then follows the sound of the meat cleaver through various echoing dark vents until we see a man on the receiving end of the vent, who appears to become visibly shaken and agitated by the noise which suggests this signifies that the butcher is a dangerous threat too him, the man tries to escape in a rubbish bin however he is found by the butcher and killed for meat

  4. What is conventional? • In the opening sequence there is a villain which is a key convention to horror the film genre. • We also know that there is a character who is the villain as they appear to be locked in a room with no windows so this creates a feeling of entrapment for the audience there’s another typical conventions of horror films. • During this opening sequence of camera tilts up to show a shot of the killer/villain, this type of a camera angle is common in many horror films because they are often used to create disorientation. • There are many types of tracking shots in the opening sequence the shots are often used in horror films to follow the main characters steps.

  5. What is unconventional? • One reason the opening sequence is unconventional as there is no extreme close-ups used, Extreme close-ups are used to emphasis the facial expressions of the victim horror films and in this opening sequence there doesn’t appear to be any. • There is also the music in the background of this opening sequence, Music is a common feature used in horror films to emphasis when something big is about to happen in the film.

  6. How does the opening sequence build atmosphere? • One way atmosphere is built in this opening sequence is by the use of non diegetic music to create an eeriness, as well as bring tension amongst the audience when we are shown the close up shot of the butchers face. • Interview shot is used when the victim is in the bin trying to escape from the killer, Point of view shops are often used in horror films so the audience can relate and feel the emotions of fear and vulnerability. • Another way the opening sequence builds atmosphere is by the use of sound effects which I have talked about in another slide.

  7. Sound effects • Sound effects such as creaky doors or floorboards are often used in horror films to create a creepy atmosphere during this opening sequence there is a creek sound effect when the butchers front door opens. • Horror films use sound to compound the anxiety you feel as you witness the event unfold on the screen. Such as the sound effect of the butcher sharpening his knife. • The sound effect of the butchers knife sharpening seems to make the victim feel agitated by the noise.

  8. Mise en scene • The use of weapons such as axes and knives is generally associated with horror films. In this opening sequence of delicatessen the butcher is sharpening his knife which foreshadows the question will it be used to chop meat or murder someone? • Also the use of no weapons shows a characters vulnerability such as during the opening sequence when the victim is locked away and is weaponless. • The butcher/villain is presented using various low angle shots which signifies his superiority over the other characters. • The setting of the film is established really well in the opening sequence as it shows a very dark and dismal abandoned streets and building ruins suggest to the audience that it is an abandoned town, which is typical setting for horror films

  9. There is also a yellow tint in the opening sequence suggesting the air is poisonous and toxic, creates an atmosphere of fear amongst the audience.
