  2. Government Agencies • Can be international, national, state and local • Most are tax-supported (are maintained, run, kept open by tax money)

  3. Types of Government Agencies 1. World Health Organization (WHO) • International Agency, sponsored by the United Nations • Compiles statistics and information on disease • Publishes health information • Investigates and deals with serious health problems throughout the world (ex. AIDS, swine flu, etc.)

  4. Types of Government Agencies-cont. 2. United States Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS) • National agency • Deals with health problems in the US 3. National Institutes of Health (NIH) • Division of USDHHS • Involved in research on disease

  5. Types of Government Agencies-cont. 4. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) • Division of USDHHS • Concerned with causes, spread and control of disease in populations 5. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) • Regulates food and drug products sold in the US to the public

  6. Types of Government Agencies-cont. 6. Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) • Established in 1990 • Researches the quality of health care delivery • Identifies the standards of treatment that should be provided by health care facilities

  7. Types of Government Agencies-cont. 7. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) • Establishes and enforces standards that protect workers from job-related injuries and illnesses

  8. Types of Government Agencies-cont. 8. Health Department • Health services as directed by USDHHS • Specific services such as: • Immunizations for disease control • Inspections for environmental health and sanitation • Communicable disease control • Collect statistics and health records • Health education • Clinics for health care and prevention

  9. Voluntary or Nonprofit Agencies • Supported by donations, memberships, fundraisers and federal or state grants • Provide health services at national, state and local level

  10. Voluntary or Nonprofit Agencies-cont. • Examples: • American Red Cross • American Heart Association • American Respiratory Disease Association • American Diabetes Association • National Association of Mental Health • National Foundation of March of Dimes • American Cancer Society

  11. Non-Profits Cont. • HOSA is a non-profit healthcare organization

  12. Voluntary or Nonprofit Agencies-cont. • Many deal with one specific disease • Study just that disease • Provide funding to encourage research, treatment and cure • Educates the public • Purchase supplies and equipment • May provide treatment centers • Supply information to community
