  4. Wreckage • Even an earthquake shorter than one minute can leave a lot of wreckage. • What does it mean? • Wreckage is what is left of something that has been ruined. • How would wreckage from a building be different from the wreckage of a storm in a rain forest?

  5. Slab • A falling slab, or flat and thick piece of concrete can destroy everything under it. • What does it mean? • A board, flat piece of something is a slab. • I put a slab of ______ on a cracker • They barbecued a big slab of ______. • We used a slab of ______ for a picnic table.

  6. Possessions • An earthquake can damage people’s possessions. The things people own might be ruined. • What does it mean? • Possessions are items that a person owns. • On your sticky note: • List your 5 most important possessions • Table sharing

  10. Debris • After a quake, the debris from a badly damaged road can be dangerous. • What does it mean? • Pieces of broken things are debris • Think of a time when you have seen debris. What did you see? • Quick Draw (2 minutes)

  11. Timbers • Houses made of timbers, or wooden beams, can collapse like toothpick toys. • What does it mean? • Timbers are pieces of wood used for building. • List the following timbers from smallest-largest • Firewood • Oak Trees • Toothpicks

  12. Constructed • Buildings now can be constructed in a way that helps them survive earthquakes. • What does it mean? • Something that is built is constructed. • What are some examples of things that can be constructed other than buildings?
