  3. Introduction Hemithyroidectomy is the removal of half of the thyroid gland. This test is performed to remove hazardous or cancerous lumps. This procedure, also referred to as a thyroid lobectomy or partial thyroidectomy, is performed to remove symptomatic or cancerous nodules.

  4. FACTS Unless indicated by your surgeon, you should be able to shower or bathe as usual. You may have a sore throat or a hoarse voice after surgery The parathyroid glands often recover their function within six to eight weeks. After total thyroidectomy about five to ten per cent may have permanent hypoparathyroidism and will need to take calcium and/or vitamin D for life

  5. SYMPTOMS You develop a fever. Your incision or any part of your neck becomes red, tender or swollen. Your voice seems to be hoarse, husky or weak. You develop symptoms of a low blood calcium level, such as numbness around your mouth, tingling in your extremities, or spasms in your feet, hands or face

  6. RISK FACTORS The reported risk of hypothyroidism after hemithyroidectomy shows considerable heterogeneity in literature. • Bleeding. • Infection. • Low parathyroid hormone levels (hypoparathyroidism) caused by surgical damage or removal of the parathyroid glands. These glands are located behind your thyroid and regulate blood calcium. Hypoparathyroidism can cause numbness, tingling or cramping due to low blood-calcium levels. • Airway obstruction caused by bleeding. • Permanent hoarse or weak voice due to nerve damage.

  7. CAUSES Cancer is the most common reason for thyroidectomy. If you have thyroid cancer, removing most, if not all, of your thyroid will likely be a treatment option. Noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid (goiter). This involves removing one lobe (or half) of the thyroid. A doctor may recommend this surgery if a nodule or low-risk thyroid cancer is limited to one side of the thyroid.

  8. TREATMENT A hemi-thyroidectomy or thyroid lobectomy – where one lobe (one half) of the thyroid is removed. Hemithyroidectomy entails removal of the entire ipsilateral thyroid lobe and isthmus, with or without removal of central neck lymph nodes The procedure is typically performed for suspicious thyroid nodules or small differentiated thyroid cancers based on biopsy via fine needle aspiration (FNA) and occasionally for symptomatic benign thyroid nodules. At most institutions the operation can be completed safely in outpatient fashion with patient discharge from the hospital the same day.
