  3. INTRODUCTION Turbinectomy or Turbinoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove the tissue or sometimes bone of the turbinates in the nasal passage, particularly the inferior nasal concha, generally to relieve nasal obstruction. When the turbinates are swollen and enlarged it causes breathing difficulties. Many things can contribute to this including allergies, environmental irritants, a deviated septum etc. Turbinectomy, turbinoplasty, or turbinatereduction is indicated in such cases if medical therapy fails.

  4. TURBINATES The turbinates are a shell-shaped network of bones and tissues within the nasal passage. There are 3 turbinates, each on the side of nasal cavities. They are called superior, middle, and inferior turbinates.  These help regulate the airflow and the temperature of the air entering the nose and maintain the moisture levels of the nasal pathways.

  5. WHY TURBINECTOMY IS DONE Following are the some causes of turbinate enlargement. • Chronic nasal congestion • Deviated septum • Snoring • Sleep apnoea • Hormonal changes

  6. SURGIAL PROCEDURE The surgery is performed by the ENT specialist, under general anaesthesia. There are several techniques used to reduce the size of turbinates. These are the main techniques of turbinectomy. • An endoscope, which is a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera on the end. • A microdebrider, which is a rotary cutting tool to shave bone and other tissues. • Cauterization, which involves burning to remove or close off tissue. • Radio frequency, which uses a high-frequency electrical current to heat and destroy tissue

  7. AFTER THE SURGERY You may experience all these after the surgery. • Swelling of the nose, as well as around eyes and cheeks • Discomfort or soreness • A “stuffed-up” feeling, like you have a bad head cold • Numbness in the nose tip, gums • Bruising around your nose and eyes Your doctor may recommend you to go home after few hours of the surgery.

  8. RISKS The surgery contains some risks, following are effects of the surgery a patient might experience. • Excessive bleeding • Fever, increased redness, pain, warmth, or draining pus • Difficult breathing • Coughing blood • Losing consciousness
