  3. INTRODUCTION The word Arthroscopy comes from two Greek words, ‘Arthro’ (joint) & ‘Skopein’ (to look). Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that orthopaedic surgeons use to visualize and treat problems inside a joint. A surgeon inserts a narrow tube attached to a fiber-optic video camera through a small incision. The view inside your joint is transmitted to a high-definition video monitor. Arthroscopy allows the surgeon to see inside your joint without making a large incision. Surgeons can even repair some types of joint damage during arthroscopy, with pencil-thin surgical instruments inserted through additional small incisions.

  4. WHY IT IS DONE Doctors use Arthroscopy to diagnose and treat variety of joint problems affecting, • Knee • Elbow • Shoulder • Hip • Wrist

  5. CONDITIONS TREATED • Loose bone fragments • Damaged or torn cartilage • Inflamed joint linings • Torn ligaments • Scarring within joints

  6. CONDITIONS TREATED

  7. PREPARING FOR ARTHROSCOPY • Tell your doctor about any medication or prescribed drugs you are taking. • Leave all jewelleries, watches and valuables at home. • Night before Arthroscopy do not drink or eat unless your doctor tells you to. • Use some soapy sponges to scrub that part where surgery will be performed.

  8. DURING THE SURGERY • The patient will receive anaesthesia depending upon the joint and what your surgeon suspects the problem is. • The doctor will insert special pencil-thin instruments through a small cut (incision) the size of a buttonhole.  • The doctor will look inside the joint, diagnose the problem, and decide what type of surgery the patient needs. • your surgeon will insert special tools through other small incisions called portals. They’ll use them to cut, shave, grasp, and anchor stiches into bone. • Afterward, they’ll remove the arthroscope and any attachments. They’ll close the wound with special tape or stitches.

  9. RECOVERY • The patient is taken to recovery ward after the surgery, where he has to rest for an hour or more. • The patient may feel some pain in the joint after surgery. • The doctor may prescribe pain medication, and aspirin to prevent blood clots. • The patient may need crutches, a splint, or a sling for support as he recovers. • The patient will have small puncture wound at the place of surgery, where tools went in. • The site where surgery happened needs to be as dry as possible. • The full recover takes several weeks or in some cases it can take months to recover.

  10. RISKS Arthroscopy is a very safe procedure and complications are uncommon. Problems may include, • Tissue or nerve damage • Infection • Blood clots
