  3. INTRODUCTION Adenotonsillectomy is an operation to remove both the adenoids and tonsils. The adenoids are removed for reasons which include impaired breathing through the nose, chronic infections, or recurrent earaches. It is the most commonly administered treatment for SDB in children. Adenoids are a patch of tissues that are high up in the throat and behind nose, tonsils are fleshy pads located at the each side of back of the throat.

  5. ADENOIDS The adenoids are a mass of soft tissue behind the nasal cavity. Like lymph nodes, adenoids are part of the immune system and are made of the same type of tissue.

ADENOTONSILLECTOMY IN KIDS • It is the most common type of surgery in children. • The two main indications for adenotonsillectomy are recurrent tonsillitis & sleep apnoea. • It is also performed to treat SDB in children. • It is usually performed in children between the age of 1 & 7. • By the time the child turns 7 adenoids began to shrink & they disappear when the child reaches teenage years.

PROCEDURE • The procedure usually takes less than an hour. • The child will be given general anaesthesia. • This surgery does not require any stiches. • The surgeon may cut the tonsils and adenoids out using a blade or a specialized surgical tool. • There will be a raw patch in mouth, like a graze. • The child can go home in few hours after the surgery is done.

ISSUES AFTER THE SURGERY • Moderate to severe pain in the throat for one to two weeks • Pain in the ears, neck or jaw • Nausea and vomiting for a few days • Mild fever for several days • Bad breath for up to two weeks • Swelling of the tongue or throat • Feeling of something stuck in the throat • Anxiety or sleep disturbances in children

RISKS REGARDING THE SURGERY • Excessive bleeding during the surgery or immediately afterwards. • Dehydration from not drinking enough water. • Breathing problem because of swelling after the surgery. • Infection at the site of surgery. • There may be other risks depending if the child has any underlining medical condition.

RECOVERY AFTER THE SURGERY • It usually takes 1 to 2 weeks to fully recover after the surgery. • Make sure the child drinks enough fluids and eats soothing and soft foods. • The doctor will probably suggest some pain relief medications for any discomfort in early days after the surgery. • But the most important factor to recover after the surgery is enough rest.
