Information Session Agenda Introductions Intentions over next 1-11/2 hour 1) interest you in becoming members of CISV 2) provide information about the interchange program with Italy 3) invite you to participate in local activities 4) provide opportunity for youth/ adults who are members to share their experience Deadlines, costs, contacts, application process

CISV – A Unique Organization Educational Run entirely by volunteers in Canada Organization offering intercultural international programmes for different age groups, plus learning and leadership development at local & national level All ages – families, youth( 9-18), adults, Promoting peace education and cross-cultural friendship Based on years of research and firm educational principles Independent and non-political Not for profit

Cisv Identity & Goal CISV is a global community of dedicated volunteers creating opportunities for all ages to experience the excitement and enrichment of cultural diversity through educational programs providing an opportunity for individuals to learn by experience to live amicably with others irrespective of cultural background; cooperating with other organizations having similar purposes.

CISV History CISV was conceived in 1946 by founder Dr. Doris Allen, a psychologist at the University of Cincinnati (USA) She believed that lasting peace would be possible if individuals and groups from different nations could learn to live together as friends The Fredericton Chapter was founded in 1991 1992 the 1st delegation represented Canada at village hosted by Gulf Coast chapter USA 1993-94 1st Interchange with Norway 1992-2009 over 400 youth & adult participants in international programs and many more in local activities

Learning by Doing Experiential education approach – the opportunity to learn from direct experience Programmes are interactive, action - oriented, sensitive to cultural variation, multi - lingual and – fun! Participant and facilitator share responsibility for learning Cooperation rather than competition

Junior Branch …youth involvement on all levels Age range: 10-18 Youth of family members belong to JB – degree of participation up to individuals JB Structure with Board Positions & guidance by Adult advisor -leadership skill development Approx one activity every 6 weeks- Minicamps, movie nights –ages10-18; Jr JB “Around the World in Fredericton”- ages 9-12 monthly activity in partnership with MCAF Learning & meeting CISV goals and philosophies at the local level; local friendships Activities run by youth may be in the form of discussions, movies, games, excursions or guest speakers

Interchange 2011-2012 CISV Graz, Austria & Fredericton, Canada Ref # I-2011-031 4 weeks – July 2011 & July 2012 Age range: 13 – 14 (age guideline – to be 13 for 1 day between June 1 –Aug 31 2011) Participants: 4 boys & 4 girls 1 adult leader 1 Junior/co-leader Components of an IC: - A Learning Experience - A Travel Experience - A Family Experience - A Group Experience

    11. INTERCHANGE (IC) Program A Family Affair ! Interchange Theme & each day’s agenda are determined by the leaders, delegates and parents of the Host chapter. All activities emphasize learning by doing.

    12. DELEGATE Partners Each delegate has a partner from another country

    13. DELEGATE Partners Each delegate hosts their matched partner.

    14. Delegate Families The partners’ families exchange reciprocal hospitality (2-4 weeks in each country)

    16. GETTING ADJUSTED Moving in (unpacking and getting comfy) Learning about a new house (strange plumbing) A trip to the grocery store (acclimating tummies)

    17. HOME VISITS Both leaders visit each family Time to experience different family lifestyles Safety check

    18. GROUP ACTIVITIES Regional education (city tour, area excursion) Team building Hosting delegation plans activities relating to chosen IC theme and CISV Education Circle

    19. FAMILY DAYS “Normal” life at home Time away from other delegates

    20. MINI-CAMP Delegates and Leaders only, May have local help from JB or other adults (for Staff, kitchen) Structured three-day camp with CISV theme

    21. SPONTANEOUS GET-TOGETHERS Optional fun for two sets of partners Can ease loneliness for visiting delegate

    22. FAMILY WEEK No scheduled group activities Each family shares “typical” summer vacation or activities Special bonding time for family Hosting leader plans to do something special with her/his partner

    23. NATIONAL PRESENTATION Visiting delegation shares their culture Songs, Dance, Food… Leader & youth plan this prior to Interchange beginning
