Physical Changes • Physical changes are in size, shape, volume, and state of matter. • Sawing wood, shredding paper, and melting wax are all physical changes. Copper can be hammered into sheets, and gemstones carved into beautiful shapes as a result. • In each case, the substance does not change into something else.
Chemical changes • A chemical change occurs when one kind of matter changes into another type of matter with different properties. • Cooking a potato is one example of a chemical change. So is rusting iron. • It’s not always easy to tell when a chemical reaction occurs. Changes can cause heat, light, sound, and fizzing.
States of Matter The three types of matter: Solid, Liquid, Gas The states of matter are called physical property. Examples
Melting Each object reaches a point where it turns from a solid to a liquid or solid to gas or liquid to gas. That is a melting point. Each melting point is different.
