  1. Sustaining a Community’s Water Resources – How Do We Do It? Presentation to REGFORM Water Seminar September 24, 2008

  2. What water resources?

  3. It’s about asking lots of questions • How much water are we using now? • How much will we grow in 10, 20…years? • In regard to our infrastructure, when will it need repair, expansion etc.? • Is stormwater management an issue now or in future? Are we prepared for drought? • How much energy do we use providing water services? Can we reduce it? • What if…?

  4. What if we…? • Used less energy pumping and treating water? • What if we stopped watering our grass with drinking water? • What if we had full cost pricing for water services? • What if we kept raindrops on the land where they fell instead of draining away? • What if we used more native plants in landscaping? • What if we did more development planning at the watershed rather than the neighborhood scale? • What if every home were water independent?

  5. What if we start thinking outside of the pipe?

  6. What if we find better methods of erosion control?

  7. Sustaining a community’s water resources – how do we do it? • Recognize the challenges • Create a baseline of information • Look for opportunities to conserve, reduce, reuse and recyle • Rank investment opportunities • Figure out financing • Implement creative solutions
