    2. Goals To investigate writing in the mathematics classroom To examine math notebooking structures and resources To experience the teaching and learning of mathematics

    3. Introducing Math Notebooking 1. Take a few minutes to personalize the front cover of your notebook. Include the title Math Notebooking. 2. After the cover is personalized, turn to the fourth page and jot down your thoughts about the following: What do you hope to accomplish by using writing in the math classroom? What concerns do you have about using writing in the math classroom?

    5. In Ways Can Patterns Be Represented? Pattern Representations

    6. Focusing on Standards Sixth: Analyze numeric and algebraic patterns and pattern relationships. Seventh: Analyze geometric patterns and pattern relationships. Eighth: Translate among verbal, graphic, tabular, and algebraic representations of linear functions.

    8. In Ways Can Patterns Be Represented? Pattern Representations

    10. Providing Feedback and Grades Formative Assessment: Work together to generate a process that can be used to provide feedback for the work in the notebook. Summative Assessment: Work together to develop a plan to obtain a grade or grades for the work in the notebook.

    11. Adapting Lessons Identify a set of lessons or standards that build a concept. Plan a way to introduce the concept with writing. Plan several notebooking activities and represent them on a poster. Be prepared to share your notebooking activities with the whole group.

    12. Math Notebooking in the Middle School Grades What strategies can be used to manage notebooking? What strategies can be applied so that students can use the notebooks as study guides? What questions do you now have about notebooking?

    13. Writing in Math Class Helps Students: Be aware of what they know and don’t know Connect to prior knowledge Construct mathematical knowledge Reflect on what is known Have an opportunity to raise questions Keep thoughts organized

    14. Writing in Math Class Helps Teachers: Find out what students know about concepts Make instructional decisions Discover student attitudes and beliefs Determine if instruction was effective
