  2. Profile of IPRCC--Who are we? The International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC) is an international poverty reduction institution jointly initiated and established by Chinese Government, UNDP and other international organizations.

  3. It was commissioned to communicate on poverty reduction experiences, promote the progress of poverty reduction, organize applied research, optimize policy-making, increase international exchanges and facilitate international cooperation. It has been dedicated to the review, study, exchange and dissemination of worldwide successful experiences in poverty reduction, communication and cooperation across the international community in poverty reduction and social development and world progress in the design and execution of poverty reduction policies, in an aim to contribute to the elimination of world poverty.

  4. On September 14, 2005, in his remarks titled Common Prosperity through Prevalent Development to the UN 60th Anniversary Summit on Development Funding, Chinese President Hu Jintao announced that the International Poverty Reduction Center in China was established this May in Beijing, with a mandate to contribute to worldwide poverty reduction.

  6. The founding of the IPRCC is an important action by Chinese Government to honor its commitment to assist the developing world, and reflects the government’s desire to expand international cooperation in the field of poverty reduction and social development.

  7. The functions of IPRCC-- What are we doing? ★Training on poverty reduction ★ Exchanges and collaboration in poverty reduction ★ Applied research on poverty ★ China-Africa Cooperation in poverty reduction

Up to the end of 2007, the IPRCC has accomplished 13 projects of applied research, 7 international training seminars involving 191 medium-senior level government officials from 59 countries, 3 high-level international conferences, 6 specialized international seminars, and publications of 4 works of poverty reduction theory and practice and 2 collections of conference proceedings.

  9. 1. International Training on poverty reduction • 2005-2007,7 workshops were held, but in 2008,9 workshops will be organized. • Training model: 2 weeks period,1 week for lecture and discussion.1 week for field visit. • Case discussion and assessment.

  10. 2. International exchange on poverty reduction Forums, conferences of seminars on Poverty Reduction In cooperation with relevant government agencies and international organizations, IPRCC plans to build a forum on the following subjects: different manifestation and causes of poverty in different countries; worldwide achievements and progress in theoretical research on poverty; information on poverty policies in different countries; experiences and lessons drawn from programs implemented; different analysis and research methods. Joint Implementation of Programs IPRCC is willing to collaborate with developing countries and international organizations in conducting programs targeting developing countries, based on existing resource and conditions. Field Trip to China for the representatives from developing countries

Major events --On May 18-19, 2005, IPRCC and WBI jointly hosted the East Asia Regional Seminar on Pro-poor Growth Policy, which was participated by representatives from 17 countries and 4 international organizations --From September 25 to 29, 2006,the Second ASEAN Plus Three High-level Workshop on Poverty Reduction --During May 23-24, 2006, the International Conference --the Poverty Reduction Strategy in the New Millennium: Emerging Issues, Experience and Lessons --During October 17-19, 2007, International Conference on Taking Actions for the World’s Poor and Hungry People --From October 30 – November 4, 2007, First China-ASEAN Forum of Social Development and Poverty Reduction

International Research on poverty reduction Priority Areas of Research Agenda for IPRCC ★Internationalization of poverty reduction experience in China ★ Localization of international experiences ★ Comparative study of poverty and poverty reduction information development between China and other countries ★Joint research

  13. 4.Promoting Sino-Africa Cooperation in poverty reduction ☆Consulted with domestic agencies to reach preliminary agreements; ☆Consulted with some international organizations on the feasibility and action schemes for cooperation with Africa on poverty reduction ☆DFID financial support to launch the Program of the Comparative Study of Poverty Reduction Modes between China and Africa ☆Field visit to Africa countries.

  14. What have we learned from this workshop? • International aid have played a special important role in developing countries including China. International aid will be still needed and should be increased. • How to manage aid effectively keeps a problem. Traditional donors have more lessons than experiences, and the emerging donors lack of experiences how to deliver assistance. Both need to increase the dialogue and cooperation.

  15. China’s successful development and poverty reduction sets a model for the developing world. But the model can not be simply understood by one or two models. There are a lot of factors decided the success. • From the assessment on the workshops and the field visit in Africa, some experiences can be shared and learned by the developing countries.

  16. IPRCC is a special platform to exchange the experiences to the developing countries, the key issue is how to make the experienceInternationalization. • IPRCC is also a good platform for cooperation on poverty reduction in Africa.

  17. What kinds of cooperation do we need? ★Training,such as workshop in TANZIANIA this year. ★Communication or knowledge sharing on poverty reduction and social development: conference, forum, field visit in China, etc ★Joint-research: Promoting the Chinese experiences internationalization; Assessing the international cooperation projects experiences in China and China aid projects in Africa. ★Enhancing capability of IPRCC on conducting international assistance ★Pilot poverty reduction projects in African countries.
