Beyond the Horizon. Lessons from KEEN-Regions Brussels, 17 April 2012
The Project KEEN-Regions: • FP7 - Regions of Knowledge • July 2009 - May 2012 • Focus on nanotechnology • Involves 3 research-driven clusters in Veneto, Rhône-Alpes and the Basque Country
The Partnership Policy Maker Veneto Innovazione Regione del Veneto Ville de Grenoble SPRI Research Veneto Nanotech CEA-LETI CIDETEC CIC nanoGUNE Business GAIA Minalogic CRACA
The Objective Boosting collaborations between Veneto, the Basque Country and Rhône-Alpes in order to • combine and integrate their research resources to increase synergies and to complement one another, • maximize the use of research infrastructures, • develop a Joint Action Plan.
KEEN Approach 3 Mapping, 1SWOT 3 in-site visits 3 WorkingGroups 23 actions (15 local, 8 trans-regional) 3 regionalmeetings 22 actions (15 local, 7 trans-regional) Foresight Exercise International context analisys Joint Action Plan 19 actions (13 local, 9 trans-regional)
Working Groups A working group methodology allowed to discuss the topics selected by the partners as strategic for fostering knowledge and excellence of the Nano sector in their regions. Three macro-topics were identified: SMEs-Research relationship: how to foster the use of research infrastructures for SMEs. Creativity / Art & Science methodology application. Supporting the generation of new ideas Joint mobility schemes
Foresight Exercise • The exercise: • Focused on trans-regional actions; • Compared the values assigned by each partner area to each action; • Identified the most effective and implementable actions. The session involved the partners and the Advisory Group, leaded by a facilitator.
Advisory Group • Group of four experts • providing an external point of view and a fresh input on possible ways and tools for joint collaboration, • suggesting successful cases in the EU
Why KEEN is smart? • One priority: Nano/Micro • Participatory process (triple helix represented) • Learning process • analysis of research infrastructures/policy schemes • exploration of the business needs • SWOT • mutual visits • international context analysis • Brainstorming and discovery of cross-border complementarities • Working Groups • Regional meetings • Foresight exercise
Main achievements • Partnership in new research projects • Future coordination in KETs initiatives • KEENborg • Joint Action Plan
