  2. THREE BASIC GUIDELINES… • BE DOING SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE • BE DOING IT IN A WAY THAT ALLOWS OTHERS TO BE PRODUCTIVE • BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHER PEOPLE AND THEIR PROPERTY

  3. Full uniform is required. No exceptions! Students must have an Iona photo I.D. if they wish to borrow material or use a computer. Food, drinks and gum are NOT allowed in the Library Backpacks must be placed in the storage location before passing through the library gates. 4 students per table GENERAL POLICIES

  4. STUDENT BEHAVIOUR • Consideration for those working around you is expected. • Respectful behaviour with Library Staff is expected • Expect that noisy groups will be asked to meet somewhere else

  5. ELECTRONIC The Iona library has access to Britannica Online as well as Ebsco. These online databases are excellent for students as they are always credible! Please see a library staff member for the login information The Iona library also has access to thousands of eBooks. These eBooks can be accessed from our website. See your teacher-librarian(s) for username and password. RESOURCES

  6. RESOURCES ELECTRONIC Iona’s Online Catalogue of resources is called, OPAC. Go to the Iona home page and select the book icon at the top tool bar. From here you can search the catalogue by subject, title, key word or author.

  11. In order to logon to a library computer, please inform the library staff and find an available computer. The cross-curricular lab is only used by classroom teachers and their students. Computers are to be used for curriculum- related work including word-processing The Internet is to be used for research and curriculum –related searches ONLY No personal e-mail, MSN or chat sites unless it is school-related Students who DO NOT adhere to Iona’s Computer Policy, outlined in the Student Handbook, will face the consequences including loss of library privileges Students should have an Iona i.d. to use a Library computer COMPUTERS

  12. HOW TO LOG ON FOR THE 1ST TIME • Username is student i.d. number. Include all digits • Password is student i.d. number. Include all digits • In a few weeks you will be prompted to change your password. Be sure to create a password you will remember!

  15. Grade 9 English Classes One of the major assignments for your English class involves participating in the Accelerated Reader Program. Each of you will need to ‘bank’ 30 points to receive the 5% that this assignment is worth on your final grade.

ACCELERATED READER • The Accelerated Reader Program has been designed to encourage and reward Grade Nine Students for reading. • The books in the program have a blue sticker on the spine, a reading level (AR BL) and a point value on the inside cover. • Browse the fiction section of the library and select your AR book. Remember to look for your reading level and the number of points the book is worth. FINDING A BOOK YOUR LIBRARY In your school library, we encourage students to be considerate of the following guidelines: • Be sure that you are doing something productive. Leisure reading, computer use, research and group-based work are all encouraged. Playing cards and having your lunch however, are not appropriate in the school library space. • Be sure to work in a way that allows others to be productive. Cell phones, mp3 players and the like are therefore not permitted. Be respectful of others and their property. This in- cludes the library. All Lancers must be in full uniform. Finding a book is easy if you know where to look! Remember, all books are organized by subject category. The following list will help you in your search: 000—Generalities 100—Philosophy & Psychology 200—Religion 300—Social Science 400—Language 500—Natural Science & Mathematics 600—Technology 700—The Arts 800—Literature 900—Geography & History R—Reference Materials USING E-LIBRARY To login to this on-line database you must enter “cardinalleger” as your username and “elibrary” as your password. Once in the system you can search the database by author, title or keyword. FINDING A BOOK IN OUR LIBRARY To access our library catalogue click on the OPAC icon and begin your search either by title, keyword, subject, etc. Feel free to use the computer at the circulation desk if the lab is in use.   17. ACCELERATED READER • Read one or two chapters of the book that you have selected to determine whether or not it grabs your interest. If you don’t like the book change it right away. • You may only check out one AR book at a time. You have the novel for a two week loan period and you may renew it if you need more time to read. You will not be permitted to take an AR test if you have overdue books or an outstanding fine.

  18. ACCELERATED READERTest Time! • When you are ready to take an AR test come down to the library and let a library staff member know that you are here for your AR test. We will then set you up on the AR designated computer and you’re all set! • There are no extra points for being fast on a test so be sure to take your time. • When taking a test you cannot go back to previous answers. • You cannot take the test more than once for the same book so be prepared!
