  1. PPEK 2141: Main dan Perkembangan Lecturer: Prof. Madya Dr. Mariani Assignment 4: INTERNATIONAL PLAY Chinese yo-yo By: Uma Maheswary (PEK 070046) Wan Hasanah (PEK 070047) Wee Yen Ting (PEK 070048)

  2. Brief History of Chinese Yo-Yo • The Chinese yo-yo is a toy from China • It was found during the Ming dynasty; roughly 1386-1644 A.D. • Chinese yo-yos were traditionally made of bamboo • Often be found in the ongoing street entertainment of Chinese festivals/Chinese acrobats and sometimes in Chinese ethnic dance. • In the West, it is known as the diabolo.

  3. Structure of Chinese yo-yo • Consisting of two equally-sized discs connected with an axle. • Chinese Yo-Yo is a toy consisting of two sticks with a string tying at both of the ends. • Some Chinese yo-yos have grooves inset in the rim of the discs • When it spins fast enough, it lets out wonderful sounds.  So Chinese Yo-Yo is also called Pull-Bell. (扯鈴 chě líng ) • Approximation: Dices:4" diameter;  Sticks: 16" Long.

  4. Differences of Chinese yo-yo and the Diabolo

  5. Parts of yo-yo Types of Yo-yo

  6. Chinese yo-yo Diabolo

  7. How to play Chinese Yo-yo in general • manipulate (disapproving to control over something to own advantage) it on a string tied to two sticks, which are held by the player. • By spinning the Chinese yo-yo fast enough, the player can elicit (obtain) a humming sound from the yo-yo. • Once the beginner has learned to spin the Chinese yo-yo and maintain its speed, he can then progress to learning how to do tricks with the yo-yo, sticks, and string. • From just a few simple tricks many highly elaborate variations can be created, and several tricks can be strung together to form routines.

  8. How to play Chinese Yo-yo step by step

  9. Step 1: Untied the string which bonded the two sticks together. • Step 2: Hold the ends of sticks which do not have the string. • Step 3: Put the Chinese yo-yo on the floor in front of you and have the string spread out under it. • Step 4: Now take the right stick, lift up the yo-yo a bit and move the string counter clockwise (once), under it.

  10. Step 5: Position the yo-yo even farther right. • Step 6: Begin by rolling the yo-yo across the floor in front of you. • Step 7: Start your roll slow, but accelerate faster as the yo-yo moves Left.

  11. Step 8: As the yo-yo reaches a point in front of you (before your left foot's position); gently lift the yo-yo up by lift with both sticks. • Step 9: The yo-yo should be spinning counterclockwise. Try to center the yo-yo and begin to pull harder with the Right hand stick.

  12. Step 10: Make sure the yo-yo is running in the middle of the string (standard position). • Step 11: Accelerate the Chinese yo-yo by moving both sticks up and down. • Step 12: Spin the Chinese yo-yo and try to keep it from tilting .

  13. Ways to keep your yo-yo from tilting : put your rightstick forward put your right stick forward when the yo-yo's near dice istilted down toward you OR

  14. put your right stick back when the yo-yo's near dice is tilted up toward you

  15. Step 14: Make sure the surface of the yo-yo's near dice is facing towards you. HOW to adjust when….. the surface of the near dice facing left : Touch the centre of the rim of near dice with the right stick which ends have string to adjust it back to the centre. the surface of the near dice facing right : Touch the centre of the rim of far dice with the right stick which ends have string to adjust it back to the centre.

  16. Accelerate (O/C) - the first thing you need to learn to accelerate. • Lift Up (O) - lift the yo-yo up while the yo-yo is running on the string. • Swing (O) - swing the yo-yo from the sticks clockwise and then counter clockwise (like a swing that goes over the top) • Toss and Catch (O) - launch the yo-yo into the air by separating the sticks rapidly. Catch on taut strings. Important Note: (O) represents open string drive to do the trick (C) represents that you will need to be in closed string drive (X) will require crossed strings

  17. Once you are able to centered the yo-yo and maintain its speed, you are ready to performed Some Fundamental Tricks

  18. Elevator (C) - have one stick at the top and one at the bottom and pull the sticks apart, the yo-yo will ascend[also called ant climbing the tree] • Stick Grind (O) - get the yo-yo to run on the yo-yo stick • Waterfall (O) - from standard position, take one stick and wrap it over the other stick and then under the yo-yo; from here take the second stick and flip in the opposite direction Important Note: (O) represents open string drive to do the trick (C) represents that you will need to be in closed string drive (X) will require crossed strings

  19. Jumping (O) - have the yo-yo running on one of the sticks and then throw it into the air and catch it with the other stick • Wrap and Escape (O) - from standard position, take one stick and wrap it over the other stick and then under the yo-yo; from here move the first stick all the way over so that it crosses over the Chinese yo-yo. Important Note: (O) represents open string drive to do the trick (C) represents that you will need to be in closed string drive (X) will require crossed strings

  20. Benefit of playing Chinese yo-yo to Children • Developing gross motor skills. • Ability to focus on tasks. • Practice physical and spiritual discipline. • Help temper one's personality. • Creates a friendly social environment. • Unique and visual way of making Chinese culture and heritage accessible to a broad audience.
