  1. GEONETCast Implementation Group GEONETCast: Delivery global data and observations Presented by: Sally Wannop – EUMETSAT EU’s Speaker Corner at GEO-X, Geneva, Jan 2014

  2. What is GEONETCast? • GEONETCast is a distribution system for environmental satellite data and products using commercial TV satellites and low cost, off-the-shelf reception technology • GEONETCast is a part of GEO Task – IN-04: GEOSS Communication Networks

  3. GEONETCast Partners • Services operated by & data exchanged via 3 GEONETCast Network Centres (GNCs): CMA (CMACast, covers Asia and parts of the Pacific) EUMETSAT (EUMETCast, covers Europe, Africa, and the Americas) NOAA (GEONETCast Americas, covers the Americas and Caribbean)

  4. GEONETCast Implementation Group • International GEONETCast Implementation Group – Bi-weekly teleconferences – Coordinate cooperative efforts, outreach and share information • NOAA/NESDIS • CMA • EUMETSAT • WMO • VITO on behalf of EC

  5. Reception Station Equipment PC(s) Antenna DVB Router DVB PCI Card DVB USB EKU Software

  6. Supporting SBAs • Established delivery of data in support of Societal Benefit Areas (SBAs) in particular: – Weather (228 data collections) – Water (80 data collections) – Agriculture (162 data collections) – Climate (135 data collections) • Full list of products via the Product Navigator

  7. Product Navigator Key Features: Metadata descriptions, data provider and data access information; Includes all GEONETCast products; Uses open standards (e.g. OGC, Inspire) for catalogue interoperability with other organisations; Interoperable with the GEO Web Portal. http://navigator.eumetsat.int

  8. Data Provider Engagement – Each GNC works directly with its regional data providers: • Satellite data from, e.g. NASA, INPE, ESA, CNES, JAXA, JMA, ISRO, …etc • Products from regional projects & agencies, e.g. SERVIR, US EPA, RANET, MESA, AGRICAB, Copernicus Global Land, WMO community, ….etc – A central GEONETCast Feedback Form is the starting point for all new data requests – Each GNC has its own process for the inclusion of new data streams on GEONETCast

  9. Global User Community 2957users 2562users 229users 120 users

  10. User Engagement – Each GNC works directly with its regional Users (a user base of over 5800), e.g. • WMO provides guidance and coordination of meteorological user requests • Ocean application community (e.g. Copernicus MyOcean) • Wider environmental data community (e.g. Global Forest Observation Initiative (GFOI)) • Agricultural applications (e.g. VITO, Belgium) • R&D community (e.g. ITC, Netherlands, SAGEO, Americas)

  11. GEONETCast & GCI • Data discovery is provided by the Product Navigator which interfaces with the GCI: - A Portal which is fully compliant with: - ISO Metadata standards & OGC Catalogue Services - INSPIRE - WMO core profile - GEOSS DataCore entries are being identified • GEONETCast and the Product Navigator are GEOSS registered components and services • Prototyping a dissemination service for the GEO-DAB

  12. GEONETCast & Capacity Building Training Channel • Improve access to training material - especially where Internet connectivity is limited • Place training material with the data • GEONETCast Training Channels are open to all data providers For EUMETCast: • Pilot service for EUMETCast-Africa started mid-2013 • Plans to use it for AGRICAB & MESA projects in Africa • Expand to Europe and Americas after successful pilot •

  13. Recent Accomplishments • New stations deployed throughout the system (around 20 per month) • Shared user management between EUMETCast & CMACast for users of exchanged data • GEONETCast broadcast bandwidth increased in Europe to accommodate new satellites & products • New links with the International Charter ‘Space & Major Disasters’ • Start of Training Channel services

  14. An International agreement among participating Space Agencies to provide space-based data and information in support of relief efforts during emergencies caused by major disasters

  15. Disaster Charter Side Event

  16. Challenges for the future • Increased data volumes arising form new satellite programmes and increased user demands for EO data • Enhance participation in EU projects to improve GEONETCast exposure in the environmental R&D community • Enhance coverage to regions without access to GEONETCast (work with US AID/UCAR RAPIDCast Pilot Program, over the Pacific Ocean)

  17. GNC-A - Contacts and Links • CMACast – wangcf@cma.gov.cn http://wisportal.cma.gov.cn/wis/jsp/cmacast.jsp • EUMETCast – ops@eumetsat.int http://www.eumetsat.int • GEONETCast-Americas Paul.Seymour@NOAA.Gov http://www.geonetcastamericas.noaa.gov/ • GEO - http://www. geonetcast.com
