  2. Name • Born as Lij Tafari Makonnen • Became Ras, when he became a regent • Was elevated to Negus in 1928 • In 1930 took the name Haile Selassie

  4. Early life • Born on 23 July 1892 in the village of Ejersa Goro • His father Ras Makonnen was the governor of Harar • His bloodline comes from King Solomon • Tafari was named Dejazmach at the age of 13

  5. Selassie year • Elevated to Regent in 1916 • Accused in treason • Crowned as Negus in 1928 • Became the Emperor in 1930 • Played a leading role in the formation of African Union

  6. Death • Died on 27 August 1975 of “respiratory failure “ • Bones were found in 1992 • Imperial funeral was given on 5 November 2000 • There remains some debate within Rastafari movement if Selassie actually died in 1975
