  2. What are terms? • The quantities in an expression are the “terms” • When finding terms, make sure you include the “sign” that defines the term • Example: In -2x -4 the terms are -2x and -4 Find the terms in this sentence -2 + 5 – x + 2x – 4 + 4x

  3. Using Algebra Tiles • What if you had to model 3 – 6? • Start with 3 positive tiles • Then show 6 negative tiles • Combine and get the answer

  4. Now you Model These! • 5 – 3 -5-7 • -2 -6 -3-5 • 2-10 5-6

  5. Do I really HAVE to model all the problems? • Instead of using the tile model, why not use the steps we discovered in adding integers? • -2 + 4 –(-5) + 3 – 2=? • Isolate the terms, positive, negative, combine!

  6. What about those pesky DOUBLE negative signs? • What does this sentence REALLY say? • I do not have NO shoes? • In math as in science, two negative signs right next to each other change to a positive. They are read “the opposite of a negative” • So what does this math sentence REALLY say? • 4 – (-5)

  7. How do I see this in REAL life? • The daily closing process of a stock are given. Find the change by comparing the day’s selling price to its previous day

  8. What about a function? • Y = 10 – x • Use the domain of -2, -1, 0, 1, 2
