  2. Helping the Community • What springs to mind when you hear the word “community”? Have you ever helped a neighbour or a stranger? • How can an individual contribute to their community? How about to the greater society in which they live? What are some of the benefits of doing “something for nothing”? • Have you ever done any form of volunteer work? If yes, what and why did you choose to do it? If not, are there any causes that you would like to help? • What do you think communities, or societies as larger versions, consist of? What helps to unite people and make them work together? What types of things divide people and cause conflict?

  3. Hooliganism • Why do you think that hooligans exist? What do you think of hooliganism and how much of a problem do you think it is in your country? • How do you think that hooligans can be dealt with? What types of measures do the police use to combat hooliganism? What types of measures do you think should be introduced? • Why do you think some sports attract less hooliganism than others? For example, cricket doesn’t generally have a reputation for hooliganism, whereas football does.

  4. Protests • What do you think about when you hear the words “protest” or “demonstrations”? Have you ever attended one yourself and if so, for what reasons? • Should governments allow people to protest? Do you view the ability to hold a demonstration as a fundamental freedom? What do you think governments think about protests? • What should a person do if a protest gets out of hand? How do you think governments should handle riots? Can rioting ever be justified or is it always wrong? • Can the people, through pressuring government, make real changes to their societies? Can you think of any famous examples of successes? How about of failures?

  5. Protests Cont. • Are you familiar with Mahatma Gandhi? How did he resist British colonial rule? Can you think of any famous people that followed his example? How might such tactics be used today? What is civil disobedience? • Have you ever heard of “protest voting”? Why might an individual use his vote as a tool of protest? Can you think of any recent examples? Have you ever used your vote to protest? • What do you think of environmental groups that often use publicity stunts to protest the treatment of animals or other environmental issues? How can people draw attention to their cause? • How much do you know about the civil rights movement in the US? What do you think of people uniting to fight for equal rights or against oppression?

  6. Social Issues • Define the term “Social Issues”. What does it mean to you? What do you think some of the biggest social issues in your country are? • How well is your society equipped for handicapped people in your opinion? Is there easy access to public transportation? Could a blind person navigate the streets easily? • Many countries such as: the UK, Russia and Canada have bans on smoking in indoor areas. Would you agree with the introduction of such a law here? Why would you be for or against it? • What do you think of declining birth rates? Do you personally want to have children? What types of sacrifices does an individual have to make if they want kids?

  7. Social issues Cont. • What do you think about celebrities trying to draw attention to social issues? Can you think of any recent examples? Is it a positive or negative phenomenon? • Recent political events in Europe and the US have divided countries politically? Can people be friends if they have completely different political viewpoints? Do you have friends that have the opposite political beliefs? • What do you think about cloning? Should scientists be allowed to clone people? What types of issues do you think cloning could lead to? What could some of the benefits be? • Do you think that foreigners should be allowed to vote in your elections? Under what conditions should it be allowed, if any? Why are you for or against voting rights for foreigners?

  8. Values • Do you think that marriage has become outdated or does it still serve a useful role for society? Would you ever get married yourself? Why or why not? • What values would you want to pass on to your children? Are there any values that your parents tried to instil in you but that you struggled with? How much do you think an individual is a product of their parents? • Are there any values of your culture or society that you would say you like? How about any that you dislike? How important do you think that traditional values are? • How do you feel when you see someone displaying values that clash with your own? For example, spitting in the street. How do you react when you see someone acting in ways you weren’t brought up to.

  9. Ethics • If you found a wallet or phone in the street, would you hand it in somewhere or keep it? Why? What do you think that most people would do? • You have probably been given too much change by a cashier or waiter at some point. If you realise in time, do you inform them or pocket the change? • If you were to see a classmate cheating on a test, how would you react? Would the reaction change if it were a friend, acquaintance or someone you don’t like? How about if you found out afterwards? • If given the choice to sacrifice one life to save five, would you do it? How would you justify your decision?   10. Celebrities • Would you like to be famous? What do you think some of the pros and cons of being a celebrity might be? • Did you have any heroes when you were growing up? Who were they and what were they know for? Generally, do you think modern celebrities are good role models for children? • Are there any famous people or celebrities that you admire right now? What about your chosen individual makes you admire them? • Why do you think that there is such a big market for gossip magazines covering the lives of celebrities? Do you personally take an interest in the lives of the rich and famous?
