  1. TRANSPORTATION TUESDAY Has 6 months of safe driving tips made a difference to you? a quick review of the last few weeks 23 weeks23.. Accidents avoided23 .. Chances for everyone to learn

  2. slow down in bad weather WET WEATHERHeat makes the oil in asphalt rise to the surface. Water and oil do not mix - the road becomes slippery and very dangerous. FOGGY WEATHER Watch out for fog … it drifts rapidly and is often patchy WINDY WEATHERIncreased danger for high-sided vehicles Stay further back from the vehicle in front : you need more space to stop (at least double what you need in good weather) spray from rain and fog will make it difficult to see and be seen movement of other vehicles becomes unpredictable - expect them to skid loose loads may move around in windy weather - don’t get hit by flying objects Hazard lights confuse and annoy other drivers. • Only use hazard lights to warn other drivers you are involved in or are beside an accident. • If rain or fog makes it difficult to see, put on your headlights (dipped) Hydroplaning and skidding … when your tyres lose contact with the road • most tyres have good traction up to about 35 mph • when you go faster, your tyres ride up in the water, or leave the road • in heavy rain your tyres may lose contact with the road at 50mph • worn tyres will lose traction at much slower speeds - when did you last check your tyres? Recover from hydroplaning … • ease your foot off the gas pedal … you will feel the tyres gripping again • keep the steering wheel straight … only try to turn if it’s an emergency • if you must turn, do it SLOWLY or you will SKID • do not try to stop or turn until your tyres are gripping to road again

  3. Our bodies work in 24-25 hour cycles of sleeping, eating and being active • Worst time of the day is midnight to 6am • You are naturally drowsy after lunch - it has nothing to do with what you eat. But it may be worse if you eat fatty or sugary foods. • Sleep during the day is not as effective as sleep during the night. You need more daytime sleep to have the same effect as a good night’s sleep. • Alcohol and some medication will make things worse. FATIGUE KILLSYOU CANNOT FIGHT NATURE - JUST WORK WITH IT Signs of fatigue when driving. You ... can’t remember the last few miles drift from your lane, or hit the kerb have disconnected thoughts, can’t concentrate keep yawning can’t control your eyes (they keep shutting and going out of focus) miss traffic signs or tailgate accidentally have trouble keeping your head up keep jerking your vehicle back in lane you mumble or mix up your words are irritable and easily angered THESE SIGNS MEAN PULL OVER FOR A REST - OR ASK SOMEONE ELSE TO DRIVE • Fatigue accidents are usually … • one person in the vehicle • between midnight and 6am • vehicle leaving the road and hitting a stationary object • head-on collisions - no attempt at avoiding the crash • deadly How to work out when YOU will be most drowsy... What time did you go to bed? What time did you wake up? What is halfway? Add 12 hours and you know when to expect a real dip in alertness. Be ready for it, especially if you’re planning a trip. • SLEEP DEBT - IT’S LIKE MONEY DEBT … you can’t ignore it • More than 90% of people need 8.5-11.5 hours of sleep a night. • If you miss this, you need to make it up quickly. • Good news : you don’t have to make up all your lost sleep - if you miss 2 hours a day for 10 days, you don’t need to sleep for 20 hours. A couple of early nights will fix it.

  4. A Check your mirror and move aside one lane to allow the traffic onto the highway.  A A Drive on her bumper (tailgate), flash your lights and honk your horn. Race through. There’s no way you’re adding one minute to your trip.   Keep back - it looks like she’s lost. Wait for a safe opportunity to pass her and be on your way. Speed up and try to get past the merge lane so that you don’t cause an obstruction. Slow down, stop, wait. Rushing only gets you to the next set of lights faster. Why risk it for a few seconds? Acceptable. But consider moving aside. B  B B  C Merge lanes don’t affect me - I’m always in the fast lane.  As soon as you get a chance, move inside and pass by. Perhaps with a helpful gesture about women drivers. Hesitate. Accelerate. Come to a screeching stop on the crossing. Whew! That was close. I hope not! C C Darn it! The lights have gone yellow and you’re already late. Do you .. The idiot in front of you is going too slow, hesitating and generally irritating you. Do you .. ROAD RAGE QUIZ Traffic is joining from a bridge you just passed on the highway. Do you .. Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power." [Abraham Lincoln] YOUR VEHICLE GIVES YOU POWER ON THE ROAD. WHAT DOES YOUR DRIVING SAY ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?

  5. RED MEANS STOP. There is no decision to make. Just stop your vehicle BEHIND the stop line on the road and wait. You may now change the radio station, check your moustache or tidy your hair. Watch out! Many traffic lights have cameras that catch you going through on red. If you don’t care about your life, perhaps you care about paying a fine. YELLOW - ALSO STOP. When the light is yellow, you should prepare to stop. Never race a yellow light. GREEN FOR GO. When the light is green, you can continue on your way without stopping. Be careful - allow for other drivers racing red or yellow lights from the other direction. UNDERSTANDING TRAFFIC LIGHTSTraffic lights control traffic speed and direction. When you seen traffic lights you can be sure you’re approaching a hazard or a place on the road where you need to take a bit more care than normal. • Position of the colours • RED is always on top • YELLOW is always in the middle • GREEN is always at the bottom If you have trouble seeing the different colours - use the position of the lights to understand the meaning.

  6. Stopping Quickly Turning Quickly • Without ABS • Braking too hard may cause you to skid ! • Apply brakes as hard as you can without locking them • If brakes lock, you will feel the vehicle start to skid - quickly let up on the brake • As soon as the skid stops, press on the brake pedal as hard as you can again • Keep doing this until you stop Usually you can turn the vehicle quicker than you can stop it … you may need to use this if too close to another vehicle and they stop suddenly Avoiding collisions … • make sure you have a good grip, with both hands on the steering wheel • be ready when you’ve made your turn to correct your direction and keep the vehicle under control • pay attention and check your mirrors - make sure you do not cause another accident by turning into traffic • generally it is better to run off the road than to collide with another vehicle • if you turn off the road, keep the vehicle as straight as you can until you slow and stop • With ABS - check your owner’s manual • press on the brake pedal as hard as you can and keep pressing on it • you might feel the break pedal pushing back - do not take your pressure off - ABS only works with the brake pushed down Speeding up … The least favoured option. But it may save you when • another vehicle is about to hit you from behind or the side • see a problem in front and there is clear space for you to go around AND • you have a clear view of the road ahead • you are in control of your vehicle • there is room for your manoeuvre Once you stop, make sure you feel okay, that no-one has been hurt and that it is safe to move away. Use your mirrors and indicators.

  7. MORE TRANSPORTATION TUESDAY TOPICS • reversing click here for your Transportation Tuesday refresher (HalWorld users only) • pedestrian safety (we’re all pedestrians at some time) • cutting out unsafe acts (remember Concorde!) • roundabouts (there’s nothing magic about them) • seatbelts save lives (remember our employee in Tengiz) • three things for safe driving : attitude, attitude, attitude • distractions on the road, in your car and in your head dealing with intersections tyre safety (by the way, when did you last check your tyres?) moving your mirrors to reduce blind zones consideration for other road users (think once, think twice, think bike!) the speed limit is not a target how the white lines help you understand the road
