This article examines the case of CISA, a research NGO in Brazil funded by AmBev, and its implications for the independence and credibility of public health research on alcohol.   2. “NO ONE CAN SERVE TWO MASTERS “ • The case of CISA/Arthur Guerra • CISA (Center for Information on Health and Alcohol): research/academic NGO created by Arthur Guerra, with the purpose (…) of creating a specific, reliable and accessible database on alcohol and its health effects (…). CISA obtained the financial support from AmBev – Americas' Beverage Company (http://www.cisa.org.br). • Arthur Guerra: psychiatrist at the University of Sao Paulo, Executive President of CISA, vice-president of International Council on Alcohol and Addictions (ICAA) • Board structure: 3 committees > scientific, deliberative and financial. • Deliberative: 8 members > president and vice-president are VP of AmBev • Financial: 3 member > all from AmBev • Public discussion about CISA: Addiction 102 and 103 (following Peter Adams’s paper - 2007). Arthur Guerra declares that CISA is totally independent, despites AmBev financing (90%): • (…) CISA is an example of how funding by the alcohol industry is used to invest in a serious project in which the independence of the research team is ensured (…)

  4. EXAMPLES OF CISA/ARTHUR ACTIVITIES “what is CISA: NGO created by psychiatrist and addiction expert Arthur Guerra. Currently in Brazil, CISA is the main source of information about alcohol and its relation with health, and is intended for students, researchers, professionals and general public. The release and information about event was not in CISA website. • Speakers were paid ($8,000). Normally events organized by Brazilian universities do not pay the speakers. When this happens, the amounts ​​are usually less than $8,000.
