  2. That Moment… Where did my courtyard go? Where I played endlessly oblivious to the ways of the world My very own shelter Took away my rooftop from me Why did the whole scene become so blurred? With a flash of an eyelid I have traveled so far Let us Build Those Communities Once Again Let us build all those destroyed communities Let us unravel those tangled frames Let us make a portrait from those scattered colours Those that have gone to sleep had once held many dreams Not all, but some we can make come true

Objectives of the Meeting • To network more effectively with partners working in AJK • To seek synergies for capacity building and multi-sectoral linkages • Across health, sanitation and protection • To share lessons learnt and positive practices • To form an effective network of partners for Bagh and Muzaffarabad • on a more Optimum and Operational basis ..accelerating assistance

  5. ITA’s Program Spread – Learning & Education Options 45 Formal Teachers trained in USA for school improvement in 40 schools : Sindh, Punjab & Balochistan ..

  6. ITA’s Core Programs I. School Improvement Program: Working with under-performing govt. schools through public private partnerships : ITA a technical intermediary II. Schools as Community Learning Centers (CLCs) Extending formal schools as optimal learning spaces in the afternoons for : -Literacy and Skills ; IT Education; Drop in Homework Study Support Centers;; Training & Capacity Building; Rights/citizenship & local Planning; School Up-gradation III. Child Labor and Domestic Child Labor Programs in Punjab and Islamabad Capital Territory: Formal ; Basic Non=formal Education, Literacy and Vocational Skills IV. Promoting linkages in country and outside through: SINP: Placement of teachers and staff in USA, UK, South Africa Hosting interns Belgium, University of Toronto Alliances: AfED, Sudhaar-ITA Alliance, ITA & ITACEC UK & Aisha Foundation USA and SAARC countries V. Influencing Public Policy and Planning through practice .. Locally, Nationally and Internationally .. • Responding to Emergencies

ITA’s call for Action & Immediate Support • ITA’s staff affected in AJK • ITA responded with relief support to the target villages in Tehrian & Sulmeia in Muzzafarabad, Beer Pani in Bagh • Relief comprised: • Tents; Tarpulins • Blankets; sleeping bags; • Medicines • Warm clothes • Food • Cash .. Linkage to Pakistan Bait ul Maal

The Evolving Program : Education an Entry Point • ITA member of the Education Cluster Group • Proposed a program on “Enabling Rehabilitation through Education” Education an entry point in camps and settlements • Coverage of program : 200 schools 5 + camps covering 25,000-30,000 children, youth and 200 villages/settlements .. Schools in tents.. Semi permanent structures (?) • Supported by UNICEF & Save the Children UK • Community based approach: Formal agreement with local community to participate in social responsibility and collective action • Cluster based /union council approach in Circle 3 and 4 of Muzaffarabad and Beer Pani UC and .. Of Bagh • Two offices established with all local staff for livelihood creation .. Islamabad office only backstopping support.

Cross-Sectoral and Inter-Sectoral Elements • Safe play and care areas in education programs • Primary Health Care and referrals • Disability identification and support • Psycho Social Support and counseling • Access to Social Safety Net programs eg. Bait ul Maal • Vocational Technical skills for emerging industry & livelihoods • Citizenship Education for Entitlements & Social Responsibility • Shelter options • Conversion of CBOs to NGOs • Gender sensitive and child centred • An opportunity to rethink systems and policy

What more is needed? • We need psycho social support trainers .. for an outreach program • Skilled professionals for a disability outreach program • We need linkages with health support organizations for optimizing health provision in learning spaces • Safety net program linkages to the 200 communities where ID cards may be a problem • We require shelter options to extend to communities for initiating local action • Teacher Trainers… strong communicators • Vocational/Skills support for short diploma programs in Development: Hospitality Industry: Construction Industry : Crafts

  11. Key Actions.. Next Steps • NISE Training (7th December, 2005) for doctors & workers • Rozan Life skills, Trauma Management • Sahil Psychological tasks, Trauma cards, Reiki • PBM Vocational Training for youth &disadvantaged groups, safety nets, could open 5-10 schools at Primary level where there are no schools. Could collaborate with ITA for vocational training in camps & otherwise • PPAF Relief & shelter through Islamic Relief & NRSP. Could provide support to ITA work directly as well. • SAHEE Training Counseling ,Dianetic Assist( healing of body through mind),Vocational Training in Khaddi based products.. • ALISEI Engineers to build tents; international trainers working in 3 union councils • UNICEF Collaborate further with ITA and the network NISE: National institute of Special Education PBM: Pakistan Bait ul Maal PPAF: Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund
