Welcome to Second Grade! Back to School Night 2019-2020

Class Information • Website: (MMW---teachers---Fox) • Snack, Lunch: (new students, please learn your ID number) • Birthdays: We will celebrate birthdays in class, no treats please • Star of the Week: A letter will be sent home the week before your child is Star of the Week. • Homework: Homework helps to establish routine, Children will need your guidance. Usually math, spelling and/or cursive. Please initial HW binder every night. All logins will be inside homework binder. • Absences: Missed school work will be saved and given to your child when he/she returns to school. Remember to record absences online. • Conferences: Sign up Genius • Report Cards: Conferences in November and report cards in February, April and June.

Language Arts Goals • Become competent readers, writers and thinkers. • Read independently. • Listen and speak competently, critically and creatively. • Research effectively (4th marking period Ocean Animals). • Reading Series- Journeys FOCUS WALL *Thematic hardcover books (please send back if sent home) * Emphasis on phonics, blending & segmenting, grammar * Teacher read aloud stories - model fluency and encourage listening comprehension * Guided Reading with decodable readers and leveled readers for small group instruction • Sight Words “Words to Know” *Weekly words that children should be able to read automatically. Each lesson’s words are listed in practice book. Practice these periodically throughout the week. • Spelling- Weekly tests, practice at home. *Pretest will determine what words to practice each week. If a child “tests out” I will provide enrichment homework in spelling for that week. *Focus on word families/word chunks/other spelling patterns *Reinforce correct spelling in writing. *Help your child to stretch words and hear as many sounds as possible. List of spelling words will be in front of homework binder.
Writing Workshop • Goal: Take risks as writers and begin to write fluently. • Journal Writing –free write (will offer suggestions) *Idea dice* • Formal Writing Process (brainstorming to final copy) • Writing is integrated in each Journeys’ lesson. Domains of Writing • 1. Focus • 2. Content • 3. Organization • 4. Style • 5. Conventions (grammar, sentence structure, punctuation and spelling) Printing Focus on: - appropriate letter formation (top to bottom) - spacing between words - appropriate letter sizes (attic, living room and basement) • correct use of uppercase and lowercase letters. Cursive *begins in January. Will have cursive homework Monday (due Wednesday) and Thursday due the following Monday.)

Mathematics Bridges Engaging! Builds math fluency and conceptual understanding. • Number Corner- A collection of quick, daily skills activities. It includes calendar skills, growing collections, number lines and more. • Lessons- main topic/skill followed by workplaces (manipulatives, games, independent and small group.) • We will learn together….
