1. Fall2014 Course Calendar DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan’s (RIM) Education and Research Academy offers a variety of continuing education courses. As a teaching hospital and leader in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, we are dedicated to serving the patients in our community by advancing the education of our staff and other professionals in our industry.

Understanding Lymphedema and the Comprehensive Lymphedema Therapy ApproachSaturday September 6, 2014 Rehabilitation of patients who have primary or secondary lymphedema, both children and adults, can present many challenges. This class will offer an over view of the lymphatic system, manual therapy techniques, compression therapy options, exercise suggestions and patient education. Didactic components and demonstrations of compression therapy, exercise and manual lymph drainage will be included. Stroke: Inpatient Rehabilitation Basics and BeyondTuesday September 23, 2014 Participants will receive an overview of evidence based literature and medical considerations for the inpatient rehabilitation of patients after stroke. A practical patient case approach will allow immediate application to enhance treatment progression while maximizing safety. By the end of the course, participants will be able to: Interpret medical considerations to safely initiate treatment and determine functional prognosis. Discuss clinical reasoning choices and progression of a patient after a stroke. Perform hands on techniques to enhance functionalmobility training. 5. Functional CoreSaturday October 11 and Sunday October 12, 2014 This lab based course offers a systematic approach to assessing and treating the core mobility and stability. Evaluation and treatment techniques based on Shirley Sahrmann, Gray Cook, Gary Gray, and Stuart McGill will be presented. Progressive strategies to core dysfunction, including transverse abdominis activation, basic stabilization exercises, global core work, and functional training from the ground up will be demonstrated and practiced. Location: RIM at Franklin Athletic Club 29350 Northwestern Highway Southfield, Michigan 48034 Instructor: Tony Robles ATC, Sports Performance Specialist at the Detroit Medical Center’s Sports Performance Academy. Tony has a special interest in osteopathic manual medicine and analyzing athletes’ basic functional movements to enhance their ability to perform their sport. In his past role as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Alabama State, Tony was responsible for men’s basketball, women’s soccer, men’s baseball and men’s and women’s track and field teams. Evaluation and Treatment of the Wrist and Hand: A Sports Medicine ApproachSaturday October 25 and Sunday October 26, 2014 This class will teach evaluation and treatment techniques for a wide range of acute, post surgical and chronic conditions of the wrist, hand and fingers. Lab will include bracing/taping, manual therapy techniques and exercise progressions. Common Sports Medicine conditions will be included. 7. Orthopedic KinesiotapingSaturday November 1, 2014 Learn the fundamental concepts of kinesiotaping and the unique properties of Kinesio Tex Tape. Lab sessions will provide time to practice applying tape to relax overuse syndromes, stimulate weak muscles and decrease pain and swelling. The Six Corrective Techniques (Mechanical, Functional Space, Fascia, Ligament/Tendon and Lymphatic) and their application to a variety of UE, LE and Spine conditions will be presented. 9. Adapted SportsFriday November 14, 2014 This course will introduce clinicians to a variety of adaptive sports including hand cycling, swimming, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair tennis. Coaches and instructors will describe the sports and methods to encourage participation by both beginner and elite athletes. Course participants will learn about equipment and rules for each sport through lecture, discussion and hands-on activity. Resource information will also be provided. Massage and RehabilitationSaturday December 6, 2014 Soft tissue techniques can aide in the reduction of pain, edema, muscle hypertension, fascial restrictions, and increase ROM, circulation, mobility, and flexibility. Basic soft tissue assessment will be discussed through the class. Direct skin contact as well as non skin contact techniques will be demonstrated. This class will be 90% hands on and will address techniques for various areas of the body including gluteals and legs, cervical and shoulders, paraspinals and pects, feet and scalp. Participants with be practicing on each other. Please wear light weight clothes and bring a pair of shorts. Be prepared to undress from the waist up to practice certain techniques. A PTA at RIM Northwest Detroit Center, Janet graduated from Irene’s Myomassology Institute in 2001. She taught the “Hands On” class of their core curriculum for eight years and numerous public classes. Janet has worked privately for spas, clinics, and recently completed her 3rd season as the Massage Therapist for the Detroit Tigers. Gross Human Anatomy of the Upper and Lower QuandrantsSaturday January 31 and Sunday February 1, 2015Registration for this course closes October 1, 2014 The goal of this course it to provide rehabilitation clinicians with a solid anatomical understanding of the upper and lower quadrant musculoskeletal features with a emphasis on learning from cadavers via prosections and participant dissection. Traditional lecture presentations with course packets will be provided for all attendees. Interactive lecture and lab activities will engage students to deepen their understanding of the function and form of anatomy. A Certificate of Completion and a DVD of anatomical videos and other related resources will be provided at the end of the program. On Saturday January 31 the focus will be Anatomy of the Pectoral Region, Back, Shoulder, Neck and Arm. The focus on Sunday February 1 will be the Gluteal, Lateral rotators; Hip, Thigh and Lower Limb. This is an active participation, interactive gross anatomy cadaver lab. All equipment, cadavers, prosections, and lab supplies will be provided. Registrants can attend one or two days. 13. The Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is recognized by the Board of Certification, Inc. to offer continuing education (CE) for Athletic Trainers (ATs). The 2014 programs have been approved for the number of Category A CE hours noted in the course descriptions. ATs are responsible for claiming only those hours actually spent participating in the CE activity. According to the education levels described by the CEC Committee of the NATA these continuing education courses are considered to be Essential Level.
