GOAL The student will demonstrate comprehension of fiction and nonfiction.
OBJECTIVES • Distinguish fact from make believe • Use electronic card catalog to locate fiction and nonfiction sources • Locate the fiction and nonfiction sections of the library
Resources Needed: • Nonfiction book for read aloud • Fiction book for read aloud • Fiction and Nonfiction signs with graphics • Groups of fiction/nonfiction books for sorting • LCD projector • Two baskets for sorting • Classroom teacher
Benchmark Assessments • At story rug • At tables • At conclusion of class
Cross-Curricular Connections • Science • Math • Social Studies
Strategies • Ask questions to assess students’ background knowledge • Read fiction and nonfiction selections to students • Give clues to help students differentiate between fiction and nonfiction
Strategies (continued) • Use signs for visual reference • Hold up examples of fiction and nonfiction stories, ask class to identify • Ask students how they might separate fiction and nonfiction books in the library • Use LCD projector to show class the electronic card catalog to distinguish between fiction and nonfiction call numbers
Assessment • Breakout in small groups where class will work collaboratively to sort books into two groups: fiction and nonfiction.
Assessment (continued) • Take a book from sorted piles to appropriate section in library and place in basket.
Final Assessment • Line students up for classroom teacher and have students explain what they learned about fiction and nonfiction.
