South America coverage in GOES East Rapid • ACTION: • “OSPO to analyze the possibility of providing an image of South America every hour when GOES-13 is in Rapid Scan Operation. ” • RESPONSE: • By removing the Short Southern Hemisphere image and one CONUS image per hour (non Full Disk hours), there will be enough time created to insert one newly developed ( ~7 min) South American image in there place. Due to the removal of one CONUS image per hour, there will be reduced coverage of the continental United States. This could have a negative impact on forecasting during severe weather. There are two options to recover some of the lost data. Examples on following slides. • OPTION 1: Insert one (~2 min) subconus image each hour. • OPTION 2: Insert two 1 minute (Super Rapid Scan Operations) images each hour. • If NWS can not accept the loss of one CONUS image per hour (non Full Disk hours), there are two options that would enable imaging a large portion of South America. Examples on following slides. • OPTION A: insert two short (~2 min) images each hour covering a portion of South America. • OPTION B: insert one short (~4 min) image each hour covering a portion of South America. This may be a challenge due to time management in the schedule. • In all cases, the standard location of the image, as well as other details would need to be worked out.
