  3. Outline of Presentation • What’s in the ACA? • How can you get involved?

Definitions • Premium: The amount of money you pay for for health insurance every month • Deductible: Your out-of-pocket costs with a health insurance plan • Co-Pay: A small, fixed amount that you will pay at each doctor’s appointment or when filling a prescription • Tax Credit: A discount that you receive, based on your income, to offset the cost of health insurance

  5. How does health insurance work? • You pay a monthly amount (premium) for health coverage • When using health services, you share costs with your insurance company (deductibles, co-pay) • Some services like annual check-ups, will be covered without a co-pay #getcovered

  6. Do I really need insurance? • Accidents happen to everyone! • Health coverage = financial security • Even without a serious accident, annual check-ups are crucial to maintaining long-term health • It’s required

  7. The ACA: What’s Already in Effect? • Under 26? You can stay on your parent’s plan • No co-pays for recommended screenings, counseling, and well-woman visits • Under 19? You cannot be denied for pre-existing conditions • Insurance companies must spend at least 80% of premiums on health care services (depending on plan)

  8. Well-woman visits • Support for breastfeeding • Domestic violence screenings and counseling • Mammograms and cancer screenings Women’s Preventive Services

  9. Contraception • As of August 2012, new health plans cover contraception with no co-pay • Most plans saw this change in January 2013 • Religious institutions exempt • Covers the pill, Nuvarings, Depo shots • Does not cover condoms or male contraception

  10. Health Insurance Marketplace: HealthCare.Gov • What is HealthCare.Gov? • Website to compare and shop for health plans • See eligibility for tax credits and Medicaid • HealthCare.Gov • Telephone Hotline: 1-800-318-2596 • In person assistance

AHCCS: Medicaid • Arizona chose to expand Medicaid for all people making under 133% of the Federal Poverty Level (about $15,000/year) • If you work 30 hours a week at $8.25/hour, you could qualify for Medicaid. • Covers hospital visits, prescription drugs, mental health services, and many other types of care

  12. What About Tax Credits? • Four tiers of plans – Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum • Tax credits are calculated based on Silver plan • You can use your tax credit for any plan • Tax credits will change with income

  15. Open Enrollment • Runs from October 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014 • Must be enrolled and pay first month’s premium by December 15, 2014 for coverage to start January 1, 2014 • Special Exception • Turn 26 • Lose your job • Graduate and lose Student Health Plan coverage

  21. How Can You Help? • Huge gap in awareness • 71%of uninsured 18-29 year olds don’t know of new options for insurance • 83%of the Medicaid expansion population doesn’t know of new options for insurance

How Can You Help? • Send or call us with ideas to grab the attention of other young adults on your campus or in your community • Pass along information through social media and word of mouth • Young Invincibles Mobile App • So, You Need Health Insurance.
